  2. Background of Foundation ASEAN was formed by the representatives of five countries in South East Asia Region. They were the foreign ministers of those countries, namely : • Adam Malik from Indonesia • Tun Abdul Razak from Malaysia • ThanatKhoman from Thailand • Rajaratnam from Singapore • Narcisco Ramos from Philippines The meeting attended by those five foreign ministers on 8th August 1967 produced “Bangkok Declaration”, which said that the five countries agreed to form ASEAN

Background of Foundation The Foundation of ASEAN was based on several similarities among the states, such as : • Similarity of geographic location – all are located in South East Asia • Similarity of fate, in that all were backward states whose people suffered from colonization by Western people • Similarity of culture which is basically Austronesian Malay • Similarity of interest, that is to prevent the countries in South East Asia from becoming objects of fight between the two super powers, the United States and the Soviet Union • Economic similarity - most were agrarian states that wanted to increase the welfare of their peoples by developing economies

Purposes of ASEAN The Purposes of ASEAN contained in the Bangkok Declaration are : • To accelerate economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in ASEAN region • To enhance peace and regional stability in South East Asia by respecting justice and legal order in the relationships among the states in this region and obeying the principles contained in the UN Charter • To enhance active and mutual cooperation in matters of common interests covering economic, social, technical, scientific and administrative sectors.

Purposes of ASEAN • To give mutual assistance in the form of training and research facilities for educational, professional, technical and administrative purposes • To cooperate in enhancing agriculture and industry, extending trade and analyzing matters concerning international commodities, improving transportation facilities and people’s welfare in each member state • To maintain close and useful cooperation with international and regional organization

  6. ASEAN Membership At present, there are 10 member countries of ASEAN, they are : • Indonesia • Malaysia • Thailand • Philippines • Singapore • Brunei Darussalam • Vietnam • Laos • Myanmar • Cambodia

  7. Role of Indonesia in ASEAN • One of initiators of ASEAN foundation • Hosting ASEAN Summit Conference I and IX • The place where ASEAN’s Permanent Secretariat is located • The operation of Palapa Communication Satellite also benefits other ASEAN member • Participated in the settlement of conflict in Cambodia by means of Jakarta Informal Meeting (JIM) • Providing a place for quarantining plants and animal (in Riau Archipelago) • As coordinator of the project of food supply provision • Center of ASEAN biological research (in Bogor)
