  1. ObjectivesThe Core Plan of the Suggestion System is intended to encourage teamwork, foster continuous quality improvement, and provide fair and equitable recognition to the General Motors employees whose ideas contribute to our success.

  2. Electronic Submission • Must complete the two (2) step verification process on a GM computer. • The Electronic Suggestion system can be accessed from a GM computer, personal phone, tablet or home computer. • Once the suggester submits the suggestion to their Group Leader (GL) the GL will return it to the suggester. At this time it is the Suggester’s responsibility to submit it to the Suggestion Administrator (SA). It is not a valid suggestion until this is done and your suggestion date stamped in the system. • The Suggester should provide an email address for notifications concerning their suggestion(s). You can provide a G-mail address just for this purpose, you do not have to give your home/personal email address.

  3. Completing a Suggestion FormThe typical suggestion goes through several steps before it is finally implemented, ispaid an award, or is nonadopted. You can assist in speeding up this process by fillingout the suggestion form completely and correctly. The following items should be included:1. A description of the current condition or the problem, being as specific as possible.2. Part numbers, part names, machine names and locations, and other similar details when appropriate.3. The recommended improvement (how to solve the problem), being as specific as possible.4. A statement or estimate of the benefit or improvement that would result if the idea is implemented.5. Each suggester’s name and GMIN number, along with plant, department, and shift.6. Indicating yes or no as to whether this is your first suggestion of the calendar year.7. Supervisor’s name and department telephone number.8. Sketches, drawings, and other documents such as Product Description Manuals and Product Authorization Documents should be attached when appropriate. After all information is entered on the Suggestion Form, it is ready for you to sign andtake to your supervisor for discussion and for his or her signature. This discussion isthe first step in getting your suggestion processed. For electronic suggestions, the same information is needed. However, you will need to complete the two-step verification process in order to access the system.

  5. Suggestions Not Eligible for Implementation Awards/Recognition In accordance with the Rules, the following types of suggestions are not eligible for either a monetary or nonmonetary Implementation Award, even if they have been implemented: • Those that pertain to routine maintenance and repair, minor errors in drawings or instructions, matters of company policy, product styling for appearance only, complaints, employee benefits, items covered by collective bargaining, updating paperwork to current practice, another employee’s job performance/behavior, public relations matters and the like. • Those that suggest a change, which was already being planned or has been instructed or directed by management (in other words, prior management action). • Those that are implemented because of a major change of conditions and not as a result of the suggestion, such as a change in design or a rearrangement of operations.

  6. There are two categories of benefits for which monetary Implementation Awards will be given:Tangible - All adopted suggestions that result in measurable savings, are to be included in this classification. The award for a suggestion having tangible benefits is one-fifth ofthe total net savings for a period of one year from the date thesuggestion is implemented.Intangible - When the benefits resulting from an adoptedsuggestion are not measurable, an award amount appropriate tothose benefits is established by the appropriate approval level, using one of the Intangible Award Guides. The minimum and maximum award amounts are the same for both suggestions having tangible and intangible benefits. The minimum is $50 for suggestions submitted by individuals, co-suggesters, and teams. The maximum is $20,000 for suggestions submitted by individuals and $25,000 for suggestions submitted by co-suggesters and teams.
