  2. ASER PAKISTAN 2011 ASER- Annual Status of Education report is a survey of the quality of education. ASER seeks to fill a gap in educational data by looking to provide a reliable set of data at the national level. ASER is a citizen led survey and it is conducted with the help of Govt, Civil Society Organizations and some other stakeholders working in education sector.

OBJECTIVES OF ASER • To get reliable estimates of the status of children’s schooling and basic learning (reading and arithmetic level) at the district level. • To measure the change in these basic learning and school statistics from last year. • To interpret these results and use them to affect policy decisions at various level.

  4. FOCUS OF ASER • ASER Pakistan focuses on status of schooling and learning level of the children. In ASER we assess that How well our children learn? What are the competencies of our children in Urdu, English & Math? • The test conducted for the said assessment are up to class II & III level designed from their textbooks.

  7. SCALE OF ASER • Scale: • Pilot Year in 2008 – 11 districts • 2010 – 32 districts • 2011 – 85 districts, • 84 rural and 3 urban. • Punjab • 15 districts in 2010 • 28 districts in 2011 • City District Lahore surveyed for the first time

ASER- Rahim Yar Khan • ASER conducted in 30 villages of Rahim Yar Khan. • We selected 20 households from every village randomly by using PPS technique. • Totally 600 households surveyed during ASER 2011 in Rahim Yar Khan. • Also 30 public & 9 private Schools surveyed during ASER2011 Rahim Yar Khan.

  13. FINDINGS OF ASER – Rahim Yar Khan SCHOOL ENROLLMENT Every 3rdchild is still out of school in rural area of RYK.

  14. ENROLLMENT • Enrollment rate of Rahim Yar Khan as compared to some other districts is not good. • Every 4th child is out of school in Rahim Yar Khan.

  15. Section II : Quality?

  16. LEARNING LEVELS - URDU • Urdu Reading Level in Rahim Yar Khan is lower than some other Districts.

  17. LEARNING LEVEL - URDU 65% Children in class 5 cannot read story (text of class 2) . In other words, 65% children are behind 3 classes with respect to their competency level.

  18. LEARNING LEVELS - ENGLISH • Only 23 % Children Can read English sentence.

  19. LEARNING LEVEL - ENGLISH 58% Children in class 5 cannot read sentences (text of class 2) . In other words, 58% children are behind 3 classes with respect to their competency level in English.

  20. LEARNING LEVELS - ARITHEMETIC • Arithmetic Learning Level in Rahim Yar Khan is lower in neighboring Districts.

  21. LEARNING LEVEL - ARITHEMATIC 70% Children in class 5 cannot do division (3 digits by 1 digit) . In other words, 70% children are behind 2 classes with respect to their competency level in math.

  22. LEARNING LEVELS - PUBLIC vs PVT SCHOOLS • Learning Levels of English, Urdu & Arithmetic are better in Pvt. Schools than in Govt Schools • Totally 27% of Class 5 students in Public while 50% in Pvt. Schools ca do 3 digits division. • 37% of Class 5 students in Public Schools while 85% in Pvt. Schools can read sentences in English. • 33% of class 5 students in Public Schools 54% in Pvt. Schools can read story in Urdu.

  23. Section III : Private Supplementary Tuition?

  24. Additional Learning Support • 29% Children from Pvt. and 20% Children from Public Schools are attending Paid Tuition. • There has been an increase in tuitions from last year.

  25. Section IV : Mother’s Literacy – An important factor that influences learning levels

  26. MOTHER LITERACY • Only 28 % Mothers are literate in Rahim Yar Khan.

  28. Section V: How far have we come on RTE compliance? Article 25 A : “The state shall provide free and compulsory education to all children of the age of five to sixteen years in such a manner as may be determined by Law”
