E.g. ~ the phone • Come on in: come in at once 快进来 • Disturb: bother 打扰 • Be in the mood for sth: be glad to do sth at present. • mess: n. a cluttered, untidy, usually dirty condition 肮脏、凌乱. Part One Core Listening Passage 2 State of the World 2001 • Dengue: n. an acute, infectious tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes, and characterized by high fever, rash (皮疹), headache, and severe muscle and joint pain. Remarks: notice that the relationship between warmer climates and mosquitoes and deadly diseases like malaria and dengue fever. This is just one aspect of the negative effects. • And the growing population means many people are forced to settle in areas where they are at risk of experiencing severe storms and other disasters: 不断增加的人口意味着许多人被迫在某些区域定居,冒险经受狂风暴雨和其他灾害。

S. • Casserole: 沙锅 • Mixer: n. a device used to mix substances or ingredients 搅拌器. E.g. A mixer can be used to make cake. • Blender: n. an electrical appliance with whirling blades for chopping, mixing, or liquefying foods. 搅拌机 E.g. A blender is good if you make soup and things. • and things: and things like that; and so on; etc. 等等之类的。 • That’s a thought: that’s an idea. 那倒是个主意。 • Carving knife: a knife for cutting meat at the table 切肉的餐刀

Part Three Supplementary Listening Passage 1 Thomas Gee • Sentence: v. to pronounce sentence upon (one adjudged guilty); 判决,宣判 • He threw himself under it: 他扑到车下。 • Held on to part of the chassis: 攀住底盘的部件。 • let go: release his hands 松开手 • Rear: back • To his horror: it is horrible for him to find out that 他惊恐地发现 Remarks: It seems that a careful plan for a successful operation is so important. If Gee had known the path of the truck, he might have made a better plan for escaping.

Part Three Supplementary Listening Passage 2 Washing Hands • Food poisoning cases: 食物中毒病例 • Cholera: 霍乱;俗称‘霍痢拉’ • Hepatitis: n. liver disease 肝炎 • Microbiology: 微生物学 • Millions of food poisoning cases are blamed on people who prepare food who do not wash their hands: 每年数以百万计的食物中毒事件都可以归咎于准备食物的人不洗手。It means …blamed on people who do not wash their hands when preparing food. • Campaign: n. an operation or series of operations actively pursued to achieve a purpose. 活动、运动; launch a ~ 发起一项运动。

  15. Review Unit 2 • Recite(背诵) Passage 1, Thomas Gee, on Page 14, Guidebook III • Read aloud Passage 2, Washing Hands, on Page 15, Guide Book III repeatedly, until you can read it fluently and correctly(熟读).
