  1. Internet Safety, It’s a Teacher’s Responsibility, too!

  2. Our Responsibility • Students can access a fantastic amount of information through the internet, but much of it is invalid, inappropriate or even indecent. • Parents have a right to expect that students at school will only be exposed to appropriate online and offline content.

  3. To insure that students’ online use is appropriate follow these guidelines: • Teach students to memorize their passwords and never to share them with anyone except parents. • Teach each student how to effectively use child friendly search engines, such as Yahooligans, to find the information needed. • Instruct all students in the rules for internet usage at your school.

  4. Guidelines for Internet Use at School • All students should be taught internet safety strategies to use whenever they are online as well as internet manners or “netiquette”. • Make sure all student internet usage is monitored by a responsible adult. • Make sure you can observe the sites that are being accessed online.

  5. Guidelines for Internet Use at School • Teach students how to tell whether a specific site has valid and accurate information. • Discuss the rules regarding chat or e-mail use at your school. • Instruct your students in what are legal and illegal internet behaviors, ie. copying music, photos, text, etc.

  6. Guidelines for Internet Use at School - Downloading • Make sure all students know that downloading music and/or videos is not allowed. Downloading music and videos uses a great deal of bandwidth and may prevent other students from being able to use the internet for appropriate educational purposes.

  7. Guidelines for Internet Use at School • Let students know that by-passing the filter at school is not allowed. • Teach students that filters don’t catch everything and that they should report inappropriate sites immediately. • Make sure that students know that online harassment, (cyberbulling), is not allowed at home or at school. • “Friending” students on social networking sites is not advisable.

  8. Guidelines for Internet Use at School • Let students know that you will be checking the browser to see exactly what sites they have been accessing, (and do check it.) • Discuss and enforce penalties for inappropriate online use. • Model appropriate internet behavior for your students. Your actions speak louder than words.

  9. Internet Safety is Important!!! • If we all follow the guidelines listed our students will have a safe, positive and productive experience online at school. • For more information and resources see http://www.sbac.edu/~media/internet_safety_information.htm
