    3. VIPS: Questions to think about… Who am I? Values: What is important to me? Interests: What do I enjoy? Personality: How do others perceive me? Skills: What do I do well?

    5. Values What are values? Your socially held principles, goals or standards Research shows that values are the biggest predictor of career satisfaction. Identifying your values Meaningful experiences, dreams, goals, people you admire, etc…

Examples of Values Wealth: material comfort and security Power: control & influence Authority: control, order, leadership Fame: status and recognition Intelligence: ability to understand Wisdom: understanding life, discovering knowledge Stability: lack of changes Peace: freedom from war & conflict Belonging: accepted by others, not alone Love: closeness and intimacy Family: care and security Friendship: trust and companionship Pleasure: enjoyment, fun, laughter Service: giving to others Adventure: new experiences, risk-taking, changes Integrity: strong beliefs, sincerity, and honesty.

They dress in business suits and pretend to be the wealthy inventors of 3M Post-it Notes (values: wealth, power, fame). When their lie is discovered, they decide it is more important to be themselves (values: integrity, friendship, pleasure, adventure)…

    38. Final Thoughts No test or counselor can tell you what to do with YOUR life. Knowing about yourself and assessing your VIPS will help you in many areas of your life including your career. Find work that fits your values and personality. You’ll be much happier! Change your career goal if it doesn’t fit; don’t change yourself…
