  1. Alien Alleles Investigation A journey through genetics

  2. Learning Target I can explain how the traits of an organism are determined by its genes. Success Criteria Genes and Traits-Alien Alleles Project I am successful when I have completed my Alien Alleles Family Scrapbook accurately showing the traits that were passed to each new generation.

  3. Day 1

  4. On a mission to the planet Gorgonzola, you encounter a new variety of life never before seen. You decide to bring a sample back to Earth to study this interesting new life form.

  5. Your job is to determine how traits are passed on from parents to their offspring in this alien population.

  6. Gather Materials • Go to Mr. Hill’s Website • Under Unit 6: Genetics, 4. Alien Alleles, open the following document: • Heredity Chart 1 (PDF) • Open inNotability (Create New Note). • Put your Name at the top of Page 1.

  7. Determine phenotype • On Page 2, fill in your choice for each of the following traits (except gender): This goes in the chart “Parent (P1)”, under “Phenotype” (see next slide).

  8. Name Your alien Fill in the name of your alien in the Parent (P1) box (page 2).

  9. Determine Genotype This first set of aliens is HOMOZYGOUS for all traits. Hint: Whether it is Homozygous Dominant, or Homozygous Recessive will depend on if the trait you picked is Dominant or Recessive! (see 2 slides ahead )

  10. Homozygous • Remember: The prefix “homo” means “the same.” • Homozygous means that both alleles are the same for a trait. • Examples: AA or aa

  11. Determine genotype • Use the following information (also found on Page 1) to fill in the genotype for each trait. Dominant Recessive • Color (B or b): Blue Yellow • Eyes (R or r): RoundSquare • Nose (N or n): TriangularOval • Gender: Male=XY Female=XX

  12. Design alien • Under the chart, use the tools (marker, highlighter, text, etc.) in Notability to CREATE your alien. • Makes sure that the traits listed match the traits we see. • Decorate however you want. Be creative and have fun!!!
