    3. Two major types of enclosures considered for ATST: Rotating: Non-CoRotating (e.g., Keck, Gemini, WIYN) CoRotating (e.g., Subaru, LBT, MMT) CLEAR-Style Retractable: Collapsible (e.g., Starfire, AEOS) Clamshell (e.g, Faulkes, KPVT, DOT) Roll-Off (e.g., Sloan Digital Survey) Two most promising examples selected for closer examination and to help focus the studies and analyses: “Hybrid” Rotating Collapsible-type Retractable 2 Enclosure Types or “To Dome, or not to Dome”

    4. “To Dome, or not to Dome” continued…

    5. Rotating Enclosure: “Hybrid” (cross between corotating and non-corotating)

    6. Retractable Enclosure: “Tin Cup” (manufacturers’ choice for retractable at this scale)

    7. Enclosure Concepts (cont.)

    8. Highest Priority Trades, Studies Telescope Protection & Performance Enclosure Shell Seeing (Exterior) Interior, Structure Seeing Wind Effects (Wind Shake, Mirror Buffeting) Scattered and Stray Light Control Cost and Technical Risk

    9. Second-Level Trades Handling and Operations Concerns Enclosure Footprints, Envelope Sizes Control System Issues Safety Concerns
