  1. Part III: Structures of PowerChapter 9: Global Inequality Lecture #10

  2. Why are we stratified? • Functionalism • Conflict theories Marx Weber

  3. Why are the countries stratified? Why are some countries poorer than the others?

  4. Theories of Global Inequality(p. 278-) • Modernization Theory (functionalism) • Dependency Theory / World System Theory (Conflict theory)

  5. Theories of Global Inequality Modernization Theory Market-oriented Theory Unrestricted market Free move of capital / labor ↓ The gap b/w countries will narrow, if not disappear

  6. Low-income (developing) countries will catch up the High-income (developed) countries. Free Market / Small governmental restriction “take-off” ↓ Technological development ↓ High mass consumption

  7. Theories of Global Inequality Dependency theory / World-system theory Conflict theory Marx “Exploitation” Different countries are stratified. Low-income countries have been exploited by High-income countries.

  8. Theories of Global Inequality Dependency theory / World-system theory “Center” High-income / Developed countries Former “colonizer” “Periphery” Low-income / Developing countries Former “colonized”

  9. Theories of Global Inequality Dependency theory / World-system theory Colonialism “Dependency” “Periphery” on “Center”

  10. Unless this structure is revolutionized, the global inequality will not disappear. Gap b/w countries widens
