  2. What’s happenin’ with SIGs? • SIGDAT: EMNLP-2006, EMNLP-2007 • SIGDIAL: SIGDIAL-2006, SIGDIAL-2007 • SIGGEN: INLG-2006, ENLG-2007 • SIGHAN: SIGHAN-2006, SIGHAN-2008 • SIGLEX: TextGraphics-2007, SEMEVAL-2007 • SIGMEDIA: PIT-2006, … • SIGMOL: TAG-2006, MOL-2007 • SIGNLL: CONLL-2006, CONLL/EMNLP-2007 • SIGPARSE: IWPT-2005, IWPT-2007 • SIGMORPHON-2006, SIGMORPHON-2007 • SIGSEM: IWCS-2007, … • SIGSEMITIC: SEMITIC-2005, SEMITIC-2007 • SIGWAC: WAC-2006, WAC-2007 http://www.aclweb.org/ Go to “SIGs” link.

  3. New SIG: SIGANN(Nancy Ide, Adam Meyers) • To promote the exchange and propagation of research results with respect to the annotation, manipulation and exploitation of annotated corpora • To promote the development of best practice guidelines and standards that will support interoperability of linguistically-annotated data • To work towards a consensus on all issues crucial to the advancement of the field of corpus annotation • Synergy: Previously established SIGDAT/SIGWAC focus on use of corpora and other linguistic resources, whereas SIGANN is concerned with the preparation of these resources.

  4. Early Decision Letter of Intent for SIG Workshop Collocated with ACL • SIGs may submit an “early decision letter of intent” ahead of the ACL workshop proposal deadline • Stringent requirements based on solid track record • Example: Prior event with 200+ submissions and/or participants • Those meeting stringent requirements should endeavor to submit an early decision letter of intent one year in advance for planning purposes. • The early decision letter of intent must be sent immediately after ACL-2007 for ACL-2008 and, thereafter, must be included in each annual report. • A SIG that is not compliant is not eligible for Early Decision consideration.

  5. Requirements for SIG compliance • On Web page: Statement of purpose, constitution, contact information (including email addresses). • Evidence of 25+ members • Liaison to ACL Exec who will prepare annual report. • Two elected officers (president, secretary). • Annual report with evidence of consistent activity: • Description of recent and planned conferences, workshops, or Birds-of-a-Feather sessions. • Number of members, number of participants at recent event, number of submissions/acceptances to recent event. Note: As stated in the guidelines, ACL cannot guarantee a workshop for every SIG every year, but a Birds-of-a-Feather session generally may be arranged every year (and this counts toward “evidence of consistent activity”).

  6. Voting/Elections for SIGs • Elections should take place every 2 years, with number of terms left up to SIGs. • Voting may be conducted “the old fashioned way” (i.e., by email). NOTE: ACL currently does not have the infrastructure to support electronic voting.

  7. SIG Compliance (or lack thereof) • 5 compliant, 5 non-compliant, 3 almost compliant • Good news: Several SIG chairs have taken quick action to achieve compliance. • Bad news: Those who don’t comply by Dec 31, 2007, shall face the consequences!
