  1. 3-2 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions How can you use algebra tiles to simplify algebraic expressions?

  2. Vocabulary • term – a part of an algebraic expression, separtated by a plus or minus sign • coefficient – numerical part of a term that contains a variable • like terms – terms that contian the same variable, such as 2n and 5n or 6xy and 4xy • constant – a term without a variable

  3. Identify Parts of Expressions Identify the terms, like terms, coefficients, and constants in the expression: 3x – 4y + y – 2 4x – x + 2y - 3

  4. More Vocabulary • simplest form – an algebraic expression with no like terms and parentheses • simplifying the expression – using the Distributive Property to combine like terms

  5. Simplify Algebraic Expressions • Simplify 2x + 8x 6n + 3 + 2n 3x – 5 – 8x + 6

  6. m + 3(n + 4m) 5x + 4x 8n + 4 + 4n

  7. 6x + 4 – 5x – 7 -y + 2(x + 3y) 2x + 5x 2x – 2(y + 5x) 3x + 7(5 – x)

  8. Translate Verbal Phrases into Expressions Suppose you and your brother collect baseball cards. He has 15 more cards in his collection then you have. Please write an expression in simplest forms that represents the total number of cards in both collections.

  9. You and a friend worked in the school store last week. You worked 4 hours more than your friend. Write an expression in simplest form that represents the total number of hours you both worked.
