  1. “CRITICAL COMPETENCIES FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERS” John W. Stanko Overcomers Rendezvous April 10, 2008

  2. COMPETENCY ONE I. You must lead and manage yourself.

  3. Psalm 139:13-16 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;your works are wonderful,I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

  4. I. Manage and lead yourself. • Know • Over-choice

  5. Dwight Moody “This one thing I do, not these many things I dabble with.”

  6. Jesus-The Same Let us think about the narrowness of Jesus. He set definite boundaries for himself; he shut himself up within contracted limitations, and in this sense he was narrow. How narrow was the circle inside of which he did all his work? He lived his life in Palestine, a little country no larger than Connecticut.

  7. Jesus-The Same If his field was contracted, so also was the character of his work: He only tried to do one thing. There were 1,000 good things which a good man in Palestine might have done, but he left 999 of them unattempted and confined himself to the one thing which he believed his heavenly father had given him to do

  8. I. Manage and lead yourself. • Know • Over-choice • Time management

  9. 2 Peter 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.

  10. 2 Peter 3:8 1 day = 1,000 years 1 hour = 47 years 1 minute = 9 months So. . . If the Lord says He’ll be there in just a minute, you know what He means!

  11. COMPETENCY TWO II. Distinguish between leadership and management.

  12. 1 Corinthians 12:28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.

  13. II. Difference between leadership and management • People business • Build on strengths, not weaknesses.

  14. II. Difference between leadership and management • People business • Build on strengths, not weaknesses. • Take time to listen.

  15. James 1:19 Everyone should become quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

  16. COMPETENCY THREE III. Develop an attitude of partnership, not ownership.

  17. Philippians 2:5-8 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man. he humbled himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross!

  18. III. Develop partnerships. • Authoritarian leadership is dead or at least dying.

  19. Luke 22:24-27 Also a dispute arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

  20. III. Develop partnerships. • Authoritarian leadership is dead or at least dying. • Build Win-Win.

  21. James 5:1-4 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty.

  22. III. Develop partnerships. • Authoritarian leadership is dead or at least dying. • Build Win-Win. • Cultivate servant leadership.

  23. Mark 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  24. COMPETENCY FOUR IV. Promote spirituality in the workplace or ministry.

  25. Psalm 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;

  26. Genesis 1:26 (KJV) And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

  27. IV. Promote spirituality. • Meaning and purpose

  28. Proverbs 16:4 The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, even the wicked for the day of evil.

  29. IV. Promote spirituality. • Meaning and purpose • Help people see the bigger picture. • Take interest in everyone as a person.

  30. COMPETENCY FIVE III. Utilize coaches and mentors.

  31. Proverbs 13:20 (NAS) He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.

  32. Proverbs 15:22 (NAS) Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.

  33. Proverbs 27:17 (NAS) Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

  34. Psalm 141:5 (NAS) Let the righteous smite me in kindness and reprove me; it is oil upon the head; do not let my head refuse it, for still my prayer is against their wicked deeds.

  35. V. Mentors and coaches. • Numerous forms of feedback; a culture of accountability. • Mentors and coaches can be dead or alive. • Mentors and coaches will change as you grow.

  36. VI. In conclusion . . . • Where was your highest score? What can you do to become even stronger in that competency? • Where was your lowest score? Define three things to do over the next 30 days. • Is there anything you need to stop doing as a result of this session?
