  1. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway Diego Scardaci (INFN Catania) GISELA WP3 Manager EGI Community Forum Munich, 29.03.2012

  2. WP3 Status Outline • Introduction • The VRC-Driven Science Gateway: • Authentication and Authorization • Job Management • Applications • Conclusions EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  3. Science Gateway Service Centric Model of CLARA EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  4. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway(http://gisela-gw.ct.infn.it) The GISELA SG is a Web site that allows users to fully exploit the e-Infrastructure both computing (jobs) and storage (data) services through a normal web browser. EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  5. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway:Main Functionalities • Authentication based on Identity Federations • Authorization managed via LDAP DB • Multi-middleware: JSAGA API are used to submit jobs and move data • Compliant with the EGI VO Portal Policy and EGI Grid Security Traceability and Logging Policy • VRCs Oriented. One specialized section for each VRC supported: • Cultural Heritage • Industry • Life Sciences • Mathematics • Virtual Meetings Area • Success Stories EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  8. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway:Easy Authentication and Authorization We will promote and encourage the creation of Identity Federations in other Latin American countries, in collaboration with ELCIRA, CLARA and NRENS, and their eventual participation in eduGAIN. • Authentication based on username/password pair provided by an Identity Provider, hiding digital certificates. • An Identity Federation is currently existing in 4 countries involved in GISELA (see https://refeds.org/resources_list.html): EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  9. eduGAIN(www.edugain.org) All the Science Gateways developed at Catania are Service Providers of the eduGAIN inter-federation! EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  10. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway:The Grid Engine based on SAGA • SAGA (Simple API for Grid Applications) is an API that provides the basic functionality required to build distributed applications, tools and frameworks • SAGA is an Open Grid Forum standard http://www.gridforum.org/documents/GFD.90.pdf • The purpose of the SAGA standard is two-fold: • Provide a standardized, common interface across various grid middleware (independent of the underlying infrastructure) • Provide a simple API that can be used with much less effort compared to the interfaces of existing grid middlewares • Several implementations are available: • We adopted JSAGA the Java implementation developed at CCIN2P3 (http://grid.in2p3.fr/jsaga/) EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  19. The VRC-driven GISELA Science Gateway:Success Stories EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  20. The Latin-American Task Force • We are working to create a Latin-American Task Force able to integrate new applications on the GISELA SG in a short time; • CLARA and NRENs identified a group of Java developers to compose this Task Force; • We organized a series of virtual meetings to teach how to integrate scientific applications on the GISELA SG; • We are invited guys of the Latin-American Task Force to come in Europe to learn more about the Science Gateway Model (in collaboration with the EPIKH project). EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012

  21. The VRC-driven GISELA SG: Conclusions • 98 users registered (in less than 4 months) • Users can submit jobs through a normal web browser • Authentication based on Identity Federations: CAFe (Brazil), IDEM (Italy), RCTSaai (Portugal), SIR(Spain), and eduGAIN(international) currently integrated • The SG is independent of the underlying middleware (SAGA OGF Standard adopted) • 4 VRC-specific SGs currently available: Cultural Heritage, Industry, Life Sciences, and Mathematics • 7 Applications currently integrated • About a dozen applications going to be integrated soon EGI Community Forum - Munich – 29/03/2012 21
