  2. If an organism is larger than another organism, does it mean that the larger organism has larger cells? Lets Find out

  3. Let’s move to the lab • There are several prepared slides with different types of cells. • Compare the size of the cells with the size of the organism • Draw each of the cells and relative size and answer the question given at the beginning of the class

  4. Your results should look like this in your lab notebook.

  5. So… why are all cells very close to the same size? • DNA “Overload” • DNA information is not enough for the cell. • Think of a small town vs. a large town

  6. Exchanging materials • Exchange is dependent on surface area • Food and oxygen use and waste production is dependent on volume • So… there is a relationship between volume and surface area.

  7. Ratio of Surface area to Volume • 1 x 1 x 6 = 6 cm sq. • 1 x 1 x 1 = 1 cm cubed • 6:1 Ratio • Now what happens if the size of the cell doubles? Figure it out.

  8. Division of the cell • When a cell gets too big it divides… This is called cell division.

  9. Review and understanding • Please do the assessment questions on page 243 now. If you finish you don’t have homework. If you don’t these questions will be checked next class we have together.
