Blog 3: Cardiaclife.net BENEFITS OF DEFIBRILLATORS A defibrillator is a device which is used to give a high energy electric shock to the heart in common cases of cardiac arrest to restore a stable rhythm. This is an essential lifesaving process in the chain of survival; and is termed as Defibrillation. These days, defibrillators are compact, portable and fully automated. Not much training is needed to use one and the machine gives you clear spoken instructions. Once in position the machine reads heart rhythms. It uses technology that reads, interprets, and shocks the patient if indicated. It won’t deliver a shock unless one is needed, making it easy to be used by anyone. How to use a defibrillator These days you can easily get AED training to learn how to use this device. However, all defibrillators may not look the same, but they mostly function the same way. If you are on your own, and you come across someone who is breathing erratically, the first thing to do is call 911 and start giving CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). If you can find defibrillating device near you, all you have to do is to open it and follow the spoken instructions. But if you are alone and don’t know where defibrillation device should be, don’t leave and keep applying CPR. That’s because during a cardiac arrest - every second counts! And every minute without a CPR reduces patient’s chances of survival by 10%. If there's a public access defibrillation device available nearby, the 911 operator will tell you. But don't interrupt chest compressions to get it, ask someone else. If not, 911 guys can arrange for an ambulance as soon as possible, which generally have AED defibrillator in them.
