  1. VACCINATION AND PREVENTION

  2. vaccination

  3. treatment in case you develop the flu • Laboratory studies show that medicines approved for human influenza viruses should work in treating avian influenza infection in humans. • influenza viruses can become resistant to these drugs, so these medications may not always work. • Additional studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of these medicines.

  4. Cont… • The H5N1 virus(avian flu virus) is resistant to amantadine and rimantadine, two antiviral medications commonly used for influenza. • Two other antiviral medications, oseltamavir and zanamavir, would probably work to treat this flu.

  5. prevention

  6. Tips to keep in mind… • The virus is spread by respiratory secretions from an infected person who is coughing and sneezing so: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. • Wash hands before eating and drinking. • Stay home when you are sick. You will help prevent others for getting sick. • When you greet people, don’t shake hands or exchange kisses.

  7. Cont… • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to avoid germs or infections. • If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve. • Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing. • “swine flu parties” should be avoided.

  8. PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

  9. The “Must Have” Kit this Fall • Assembly a Flu Kit • Hand sanitizers • Cough drops • Tea bags • Gatorade • Facial tissues • Masks (N-95) • Gloves • Chicken soup • Prevention messages

  10. Flu Signage • Place signs in waiting areas describing Universal Respiratory Precautions and Respiratory Etiquette

  11. Flu-Proof Waiting Areas • Provide tissues in waiting areas • Provide no-touch receptacles • Provide alcohol based hand sanitizers • Provide symptomatic individuals with a surgical mask • Encourage staff with direct patients contact to wear masks
