Triangle Background • Triangle Objectives: • Improve the existing infrastructure to encourage the use of alternative modes of transportation to/from the Triangle Study Area. • Promote connectivity, safety, accessibility and intermodal potential. • Our Objectives: • Create a method for rating the condition of the pedestrian and non-motorized infrastructure in Triangle Study Area. • Develop database of pedestrian and non-motorized infrastructure. Condition Rating System • Creating a method for rating the condition of sidewalks, bike paths, transit stops, and crosswalks. • Sidewalk Condition Rating System will be modeled after methods used for rating highway pavements. • Sidewalks can be viewed similarly to pavements. • Miniature concrete slabs • Exhibit similar distresses • Lower complexity rating system needed for sidewalk infrastructure

  5. Three Modes of Distress • Fracture: Distress in the form of cracking or breaking. • Disintegration: Distress in the form of stripping, raveling or spalling. • Distortion: Distress in the form of deformation or separation.

Sidewalk Condition Rating Process • Examine current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. • Create criteria for evaluating. • Type and magnitude of distress. • Assign numerical values to each distress level • Pre-defined set of common obstructions (i.e. fire hydrant, mailbox, utility pole, etc.) • Visual inspection. • Assign condition scores. • Use the scores to determine the urgency of maintenance.
