  2. Boot Camp 101 Eph. 4:22 - "put off" aor. mid. inf. of apotithēmi (G659) - to put off from oneself. "conduct" anastrophē (G391) - manner of life; behavior (cf. Col. 2:11). Col. 3:9 "deeds" is praxis (G4234) - a mode of acting - not so much the deeds as the inner nature is the point. Eph. 4:25 - "putting away" aor. mid. part. of apotithēmi (G659) - to put off from oneself. "lying" pseudos (G5579) (Col. 3:9 is pseudomai (G5574) - to deceive by lies) - what is untrue; deceit; falsehood (cf. Rom. 1:25). Eph. 4:26, 31 - "angry; anger" - orgizō; orgē (G3710; G3709) is the strongest of all passions. It suggests a more settled or abiding condition of mind, frequently with a view to taking revenge. Col. 3:8 is orgē. “wrath” parorgismos (G3950) – indignation; wrath; exasperation; rage. A strengthened form of orgē.

"evil speaking" blasphēmia (G988) (ditto in Col. 3:8) - speech defamatory of the Divine Majesty; speech that slanders others & tears them down – Prov. 6: 16-19. “malice” kakia (G2549) – malignity; intense ill will; desire to injure – I Cor. 5:8; Col. 3:8; I Pet. 2:1, 16; Jms. 1:21.

Eph. 4:24 - "new man" kainos (G2537); "in...righteousness" dikaiosunē (G1343) (+R); "and holiness of truth" hosiotēs (G3742) & alētheia (G225).

The Word of Truth – Jn. 17:17; Eph. 1:13; II Tim. 2:15; Jms. 1:18, 21. Girded with truth – Eph. 6:14. A negative attitude toward truth is called disobedience – Rom. 1:18; 2:8; Heb. 3:18, 19; I Sam. 15:22, 23. The Truth shall make us free – Jn. 8:32.

Col. 3:12 - "kindness" chrēstotēs (G5544). Tenderheartedness - "tenderhearted" eusplagchnos (G2155). Col. 3:12 - "tender mercies" splagchnon (G4698) & oiktirmos (G3628) - lit. "bowels of compassion; sympathy". Forgiveness - "forgiving" charizomai (G5483) - cf. Col. 3:13 - to bestow a favor unconditionally; to give freely.

It consists not in a person's "outward behavior" only; rather it is an inwrought grace of the soul. It is that temper of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting. It is the opposite of self-assertiveness & self-interest. "longsuffering" makrothumia (G3115) - that quality of self-restraint in the face of provocation which does not hastily retaliate or promptly punish; it is the opposite of anger & is associated with mercy.

  12. Boot Camp 101 Col. 3:13 - Forbearance - "bearing with one another" anechomai (G430) - put up with; to hold up. Col. 3:14 - "love" agapē (G26) - unconditional love; impersonal love.
