  1. Hypocrites and BackslidersLesson 21 Spiritual Death and The Sin Nature

  2. Spiritual Death Addendum • I have been forced, by Internet Viewer questions, to delve more deeply into the definition, nature and mechanics of Spiritual Death than I had originally intended in this study. • The study has proven fruitful, answering some questions I have had over the years, as well as answering some of the questions posed by internet members. • Therefore, we will spend this morning on Spiritual Death and the Sinful Nature. LWBC 3-2-08

  3. Simple Mitosis LWBC 3-2-08

  4. Meiosis in the Male LWBC 3-2-08

  5. Meiosis in the Female LWBC 3-2-08

  6. The Doctrine of Death • The 7 Deaths of Scripture: (Thanatos) • Physical Death • Spiritual Death • The Second Death • Positional Death • Sexual Death • Operational Death • Temporal Death LWBC 3-2-08

  7. The Doctrine of Deaths • #1 Physical Death: Matthew 8:22; Philippians 1:21, and many others The breath (spirit) of Life is absent. The Soul and Body are separated. Eccl 12:7 - "the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it." • James 2:26 (YLT) 26 for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also the faith apart from the works is dead. LWBC 3-2-08

  8. Physical Death • Physical Death: • Body separated from the Soul - • Eccl 12:7 - "the dust will return to the earth as it was, and the spirit will return to God who gave it." • Jas 2:26 "the body is dead" - "separated (Gr: choris) from the spirit"
(note: here we have the precise equation for the definition of physical death spelled right out clearly in the Greek: "the body DIES when separated from the soul" LWBC 3-2-08

  9. The Doctrine of Deaths • #2 Spiritual Death: Ephesians 2: 1; Romans 5:12; 1st Cor. 15:22; Prov. 14:12 The Spiritual Relationship with God is absent. The Soul and God are separated. • There are two categories of spiritual Death (1) real spiritual Death, and (2) substitutionary spiritual Death. • Real spiritual Death refers to the actual spiritual Death of Adam at the fall when he was separated from God. LWBC 3-2-08

  10. The Doctrine of Deaths • Substitutionary spiritual Death refers to the spiritual Death experienced by Jesus Christ on the cross when He was judged for all sins and separated from God in place of us, 1Peter 2:24; 3:18; 2Corinthians 5:21; Isaiah 53:6; ROM 5:8. Though we were born in sin God does not make us pay the penalty for our sins, He allowed a substitute sacrifice on our behalf. What then is the solution to man's spiritual Death? Romans 6:23 gives us that answer, "...the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Without the acceptance of this gift on the part of man's free will, man remains in spiritual Death and is eternally separated from God. LWBC 3-2-08

  11. The Doctrine of Deaths • Romans 6:23 gives us that answer, "...the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Without the acceptance of this gift on the part of man's free will, man remains in spiritual Death and is eternally separated from God. (Robert McLaughlin) LWBC 3-2-08

  12. The Doctrine of Deaths • #3 The Second Death: Revelation 20: 12-15; Hebrews 9:27 The SPIRIT (Holy Spirit) is absent at Physical Death. LWBC 3-2-08

  13. The Doctrine of Death • #4 Positional Death: Colossians 2: 3-4 The position in Adam is absent. We are identified with Christ's Death on the Cross. We are positionally separated from our OSN. LWBC 3-2-08

  14. The Doctrine of Death • #4 Positional Death: Colossians 2: 3-4 The positional Death of the believer also known as retroactive positional truth. Our positional Death is our identification with the Death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, this is known as the baptism of the Spirit. On the cross Jesus Christ paid the price for all sin and also rejected the OSN and all it produces; human good and evil. Our identification with this is our positional Death to the old sin nature and it's productions, ROM 6:1-4. LWBC 3-2-08

  15. The Doctrine of Death • #4 Positional Death: Colossians 2: 3-4 Romans 6:10 tells us that Christ crucified/killed the OSN on the cross. Therefore in the eyes of God the OSN is dead and can offer nothing good. Apart from God we can produce NOTHING, John 15:3-5. COL 2:11-12 teaches that we should only accept the divine good accomplished under the filling of the Spirit and reject that which the flesh produces. The flesh (OSN) produces human good and evil which makes up the policy of Satan. LWBC 3-2-08

  16. The Doctrine of Death • #4 Positional Death: Colossians 2: 3-4 Yet, human good and evil are still a part of the angelic conflict since though it has been rejected (at the cross) it has not yet been evaluated or judged. This evaluation of human good and evil is the reason for the Judgment Seat of Christ for believers, 1CO 3:11-15, and the Great White Throne Judgment for unbelievers, REV 20:11-15... sin is never brought up. LWBC 3-2-08

  17. The Doctrine of Death • #5 Sexual Death: Hebrews 11: 11-12; Romans 4:17-21 The reproduction of Biological life is absent. (Male or Female) LWBC 3-2-08

  18. The Doctrine of Death • #6 Temporal Death: Romans 8:6, 13; Ephesians 5:14; 1st Timothy 5:6; Revelation 3:1; and James 1:15 The function of the Spiritual life is absent. • #7 Operational Death: James 2:26 The reproduction of the Spiritual Life Force is absent. LWBC 3-2-08

  19. Spiritual Death • Death is separation. • A physical death is the separation of the soul from the body. • Spiritual death, which is of greater significance, is the separation of the soul from God.

 • In Genesis 2:17, God tells Adam that in the day he eats of the forbidden fruit he will “surely die.” • Adam does fall, but his physical death does not occur immediately; God must have had another type of death in mind—spiritual death. LWBC 3-2-08

  20. Spiritual Death • This separation from God is exactly what we see in Genesis 3:8. • When Adam and Eve heard the voice of the Lord, they “hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God.” • The fellowship had been broken. • They were spiritually dead.

 • When Jesus was hanging on the cross, He paid the price for us by dying on our behalf. LWBC 3-2-08

  21. Spiritual Death • A person without Christ is spiritually dead. • Paul describes it as “being alienated from the life of God” in Ephesians 4:18. (To be separated from life is the same as being dead.) • The natural man, like Adam hiding in the garden, is isolated from God.

 • When we are born again, the spiritual death is reversed. • Before salvation, we are dead (spiritually), but Jesus gives us life. “And you hath he quickened [made alive], who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). LWBC 3-2-08

  22. Spiritual Death • Ephesians 2:1-3: • "And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest." LWBC 3-2-08

  23. Spiritual Death • (John 6:63 KJV)  It is the spirit that quickeneth (maketh alive); the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. • (Rom 8:2 KJV)  For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. • (Rom 8:10 KJV)  And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. LWBC 3-2-08

  24. Spiritual Death • (2 Cor 3:6 KJV)  Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. • (Rev 11:11 KJV)  And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. LWBC 3-2-08

  25. Spiritual Death • (Eccl 12:7 KJV)  Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it. LWBC 3-2-08

  26. Spiritual Death • Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.Romans 5:18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. (NIV) LWBC 3-2-08

  27. Spiritual Death • God's new covenant of grace is a covenant of relationship... • Spiritual death through Adam made this covenant of grace necessary. • Spiritual life through Christ makes intimacy with God possible. • THE BAD NEWS- Every human, inherited a sinful, fallen, Spiritually Dead, earthly life from Adam: "by man came death." LWBC 3-2-08

  28. Spiritual Death • In the beginning, Adam had an intimate, personal relationship with God, his Creator. "The LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breathes of life; and man became a living Soul . . . Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it" (Genesis 2:7, 15). • In the beginning, Adam served the Lord and daily had fellowship with Him, when He would walk "in the garden in the cool of the day" (Genesis 3:8). LWBC 3-2-08

  29. Spiritual Death • Adam and Eve previously had enjoyed intimate fellowship with God, but now their sins led them to flee in fear from His presence. "The LORD God called to Adam and said to him, 'Where are you?' So he said, 'I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.' " (Genesis 3:9-10) • Ever since that time, all of the descendants of Adam have been born "dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1). • The only remedy for the spiritually dead human family would be through a relationship to a new "family head" LWBC 3-2-08

  30. Spiritual Death • "Sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned . . . But the gift is not like the offense. For if the many died by the offense of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound unto the many!" (Romans 5:12, 15). • There are only two "families" to which you can belong: Adam's or Christ's. There are only two family head's to which you can be related: Adam or Christ. LWBC 3-2-08
