Most disk related operations can be performed using the built in Disk Utility tool • Disk utility: how to open • Finder->applications->utilities->disk utility • Alternative: • When Finder window is active -> then click Go menu -> Utilities-> disk utility • Shortcut: Shift + command + U • Or ctrl + space, then type disk utility • Disk Utility • Can show all hard drives and volumes • Volumes inside hard drives • Can erase, partition, restore, raid functionality (multiple drives) • Run Check disk [mark bad blocks/sectors in the drive] • Restore image to this drive and volume • Options: First Aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, Restore • First aid: check disk equivalent Disk Utility

Mac Automatically defrags • Not always, not by 100% • No built-in apple tool to defrag [that you can execute] • iDefrag – commercial defragment tool • When you have multiple drives, you can create RAID • Can be useful for servers • Mirrored, striped, concatenate • Set block size, repair RAID Disk Utility: Disk Defragment

Disk utility [open] • Create new disk image • File->new->disk image • Set the parameters for the disk image such as • Volume name, format, encryption, partitions, image format • Double click will mount it • Will be listed in list devices • Need to eject • You can right clean and clean up the image • After copy from/to, you need to eject • Right click and eject [un-mount as a drive but still as a drive, double click will mount] Disk Images

Kind of zip file • Distributed applications as image [.dmg] • Right click and compress [installer] • 10 MB, will take 10mb, zip will reduce the size • Remount • Double click • Then Transfer file, move around in the internet • Treat it as disk • You can Erase image using the disk utility • Good way to archive files • We can move to trash and clean Disk Image, Packaging Software, and Files

Mac has built in ability to burn images into cds/DVDs • Disk utility->file->new->blank disk image • 660 MB cd, partition cd/dvd, dmg files take all the space as mentioned • Format and mount • Images menu • Right click on dmg file • Checksum match can help • Image • [from disk utility] Convert to cd/dvd, extension .cdr [CD/DVD master] Disk Image and Burn into CD/DVD

  15. Not iso but cdr • Can verify • You can convert to .iso • Un-mount the .iso • .iso double click will still mount it • Copy your files into the image • Right click-> burn Burn to CDs

System Preferences -> Users Accounts • Mac is not much safer than windows [fundamentally] • Though will get affected less as there are less viruses and hackers targeting Mac platform • Will get more and more virus and malware over time • Virus creators want to get more exposure; so windows has more of them • If you do not have protection, you will get some in your mac • All big Anti-virus companies have Mac versions User Accounts

When you signup for Apple Extra Services • Will provide you an antivirus software as well • dotMac Service: Antivirus Program • System Preferences • System -> Accounts [know about mobile me service by Apple] • Configure Login Accounts • Login items • Set applications to run automatically • Mobile me service affects some features • Click the lock to make changes in the accounts • Enable and use this • Then you can add new account • Set account type • Administrator, Group, sharing • Tabs in the window: Password and Login Items • Add to login items • Click the + button Apple Extra Services and User Accounts – Configure and Create

You can also set auto logins with an account • Login time: only pass or user/pass combinations • What to show on the login window can be configured somewhere from here • Voice over feature at login • Enable fast user switching: switch user but keeps stuff running • One user can access the programs as run by other users User Accounts – Configure and Create
