  1. Amanda Duggins Hendrik Martinez Marcus Hammond Alex Henderson Chapter 10 Professional Development of Others Group 18

  2. Chris prepares for presentation on engineering excellence at De Tocqueville University (DTU) • Chris graduated from DTU School of Engineering 12 years ago • Chris was unsure on how to present the ethics of engineering to the students. He didn’t want to be overly cynical and tried to stay positive.

  3. As an alumni, Chris was asked to join the Dean’s Council, a group put together to review the academic programs, offer advice and assist in fundraising. • The Dean of DTU invites Chris out to lunch after his presentation. • Throughout lunch the Dean and Chris small talk and the Dean describes the history of DTU

  4. The Dean tells Chris about how the funding for a new lab fell through. • The rich alumnus who was financing the new lab had a tax problem and couldn’t pay until the next year • The alumnus shot himself in the head and his company went bankrupt… the school was left with no money to complete construction on new lab.

  5. The Dean stresses to Chris how the DTU needed funding for the new lab. • Mentions how corporate sponsorship is used to fund University projects and even suggests that Pines fund the new lab. • Chris desperately changes subject.

  6. The Dean mentions to Chris that the school is supposed to have 10% of its students from developing countries and that the school gets 25K for each foreign student. • Chris tells the Dean that he has been doing some work in Genala and that he knows a number of people who would be willing to send their kids to DTU, to study engineering.

  7. Almost one year later, Chris had the Girish twins and three of their friends from Genala studying at DTU. • Once again, the Dean and Chris have lunch. The Dean tells Chris that he has to “pressure the faculty to occasionally stretch a point or two to keep the students from flunking out”, in order keep receiving extra funding for the foreign students.

  8. Chris is worried how pressuring the faculty to give the students passing grades will affect the quality of engineers in the future • The Dean also mentions how the president of the college, is pressing Affirmative Action, and wants to hire more women and put a hiring freeze on male faculty.
