  3. When a number is squared-that means the base is used as a factor 2 times • When a number is cubed – that means the base is used as a factor 3 times • Sometimes exponents are written in word form. 4⁵ is written as four to the power of five Exponents

Write 53,471 in expanded form in your math spiral. 50,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 70 + 1 • Now separate each numeral and multiply it by the place value it sits in 5 x 10,000 + 3 x 1,000 + 4 x 100 + 7 x 10 + 1 • Next use exponents and 10 as the base number to rewrite the place value number 5 x 10⁴ + 3 x 10³ + 4 x 10 + 7 x10 + 1 Exponents and Expanded Form 2
