  2. Rule - First Letter • Capitalize the first letter of the first letter of every sentence. • His sister writes music for the flute and kettledrum. • Lyrics aren’t her strong suit. • Go to the store. • I walked down the street. • A car sped by the police car.

Rule 2 – Proper nouns • Capitalize proper nouns. • A proper noun is a person’s name or the name of an official place or thing. • cities, states, countries • St. Joseph, Missouri, United States • Sheldon, Carthage, Argentina • geographical features • Mississippi River, Ozark Mountains, • Alantic Ocean, Rocky Mountains.

Rule 2 – Proper nouns • nationalities • Japanese culture, Kenyan, Spanish language, Italian class • days, months, holidays • Friday, February, April Fool’s Day • Do NOT capitalize the seasons of the year: winter, spring, summer, or fall. • Organizations • Future Farmers of America, Girls Scouts of America

Rule 2 – Proper nouns • titles of movies, TV shows, books, songs, and works of art • Enchanted, Pysch, Jersey Shore, Alice in Wonderland, Mona Lisa, America the Beautiful • Do NOT capitalize articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions, or prepositions unless they are the first or last word in the title. • historical events • World War II, The Gettysburg Address, American Revolution.

Rule 3 – Family Relationships • Capitalize words stating family relationships. • Words such as Mom, Dad, and Grandma should be used as proper nouns or as titles with proper names. • My Grandma Jane and Uncle Joe visited Dad at his office. • Do NOT capitalize these words when used to describe the person. • My grandma and my uncle visited my dad at his office.
