  3. Goals of Recycle-Bowl • Hold a fun, fair & friendly competition • Provide “teaching moments” • Improve individual participation • Improve facility operations

  4. Behavior Change Theory We conducted an academic literature review. • Competition • Don’t overemphasize winning, may compromise self-esteem • Incentives • Increases likelihood of initial participation • Not too valuable • Feedback • Best for those below set goal • Make feedback positive

  6. How To Participate Schools collect and track bottles, cans, cartons and paper for 4 weeks

  7. 2013 Timeline • Registration opens – June 2013 • Toolkits mailed – Early October • Competition starts – October 21 • Competition ends – November 15 • Data due – December 11 • Award ceremony – February 2014

Prizes • One school/state will win $1000. • National champion from state winners will win additional prizes. • Community recycling schools compete nationally for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes. • Whole school districts compete nationally for a 1st place prize. NEW THIS YEAR. • One school will win $500 for recycling the most cartons. • The school that improves the most from one year to another wins recycling bins. • Schools near Nestle facilities are eligible for an additional prize.

  10. Competition Components • New this year: • School district category with a national prize • Bragging rights for food scrap collection and waste reduction • Online store from Weisenbach • Schools that use competition to start recycling are eligible for free recycling bins

  11. Acceptable Material • Paper: • Chipboard • Cardboard • Magazine/Newspaper • Office paper/Mail • Phone books Cafeteria materials: • Aluminum beverage cans • Cartons • Glass bottles and jars • #1-7 plastic (i.e. PS trays) • Steel food cans As accepted by the recycling drop-off or service provider. Pilot testing Food Scrap collection in 2013. Won’t be included in weight totals for prize distribution.

  17. Continuing the Success 2012 • 25% increase in registrations from 2011 • 51% of schools that registered in 2011 returned in 2012 • 78% were in the school category, 19% in the community category and 3% in open division

  18. Recycling Results • Total = 4,493,157 pounds • Total commingled = 2,539,247 pounds • Total source separated = 1,953,909 pounds • Total pounds by category: • School vs School Category – 3,327,404 pounds • Community Category – 1,509,908 pounds • Open Division – 47,392 pounds

  19. Impact Metrics • Participating schools recycle 10% more than schools that don’t participate in Recycle-Bowl. • Around 3% use the competition to start a recycling program.
