  1. What’s happening in your stomach?

  2. Lecture 6.3 – Strong Acids and Bases

  3. Today’s Learning Target • 6.3 – I can characterize a compound as either a strong acid/base or weak acid/base based on how much it dissociates.

  4. What are strong and weak acid and bases?

  5. I. Strength of Acids/Bases • Acids/Bases can be classified as strong or weak based on how much it disassociates. • Disassociate– To break apart • Acids/Bases that completely dissociate are called strong acids/bases • Acids/Bases that only partially dissociate are called weak acids/bases.

  6. Dissociation

  7. II. Strong Acids You must memorize these! 1. HI 2. HBr 3. HCl 4. HNO3 5. HClO4 6. HClO3 7. H2SO4

  8. III. Strong Bases You must memorize these! 1. Ca(OH)2 2. Sr(OH)2 3. Ba(OH)2 4. NaOH 5. KOH 6. RbOH 7. CsOH

  9. All acids/bases that are not on this list are weak acids/bases

  10. Summarize
