Alfred Adler … • Alfred Adler (1870-1937) • Born in Austria • Austrian medical doctor & Psychotherapists • Founder of the school of individual psychology • Worked with Sigmund Freud • Did not approach Freud’s theory about sexuality but rather expanded on it • Freud believed that humans were driven to do stuff by desire and excitement but Adler believed that humans were more into believing they do something because they believe they have the power to do it • Was expelled out of Sigmund’s collaboration

Alfred Adler … • His famous concept was the inferiority complex • As a child he was diagnosed with pneumonia and was less likely to survive • He fought the disease to decided to become a doctor himself in order to help ease out the suffering of the disease as he experienced • At a young age Adler started having trouble at school failing math • His teacher suggested that he should be removed out of school and apprenticed to a cobbler • His father took no notice of what the teacher thought but rather showed Adler he believes in him • Adler therefore became more determined to prove the teacher wrong and he was soon on top of his math class

  5. Inferiority Complex. . . Inferiority: lower in station, rank, degree, or grade Complex: so complicated or intricate as to be hard to understand or deal with: a complex problem. Inferiority complex: the feeling that someone is inferior to others in one or more ways • Alfred Adler is best known as the founder of Individual Psychology. • Devastated by the death of his young brother he took up psychology • He stated that all people feel inferior at certain times in their life, especially as children. • Individuals create a story for themselves • Continuous success or failure is determined by the ability to adjust the feeling of inferiority to the demands of life.

  6. Inferiority Complex ... • His main focus is not where people came from, but where they were headed • Gates: Birth order(early environment), earliest memories(reflect fundamental views of life) Dreams (reveals inner physic secrets)

Violence In Society . . . • Alfred Adler’s study made a huge impact on the way we look at things today • His studies showed that different motives, goals and lifestyles represent individual behaviours & make an impact on their lifestyles • Today's youth deal with many situations and based on their circumstances hence moulding themselves into a certain character • Based on their cultural and moral upbringing from their early birth they show specific positive & negative behaviours
