  2. Reading Comprehension Cause and Effect Review A cause is what makes something happen, and an effect is what happens as a result of it. An effect happens because of something. (cause)

  3. Reading Comprehension A cause is what makes something happen. The reader must be able to identify causes of events. Understanding causes and effects can be challenging. The readers has to sort out important events and then analyze the factors that could have caused the events.

  4. Cause and Effect: Part II Let’s analyze the following Graphic Organizer charts that can be used to help sort out the cause and the effect: Cause/Effect Cause/Effect

  5. Cause and Effect: Part II The boxes on both graphic organizers are to show the causes and effects. The 2nd graphic organizer is more complicated. We will fill out both so you will know how to use them.

  6. Cause and Effect: Part II On the 2nd graphic organizer we will write the phrases or words that show the causes to the event. At the bottom of the page we will place words or phrases showing the effects of the events. Let’s use the article on the following slides for this exercise…

  7. Cause and Effect: Part II Article: People have been growing taller for the last few centuries. Even today, girls grow taller than their mothers, and boys outgrow their fathers. There are many possible explanations. Some diseases of childhood have been eliminated; medical care is better; and mothers are healthier.

  8. Cause and Effect: Part II Article continued… In addition, better food is more available. All of these are important, but most experts agree that the change in food has proven to be the dominant factor. Let’s answer some cause and effect questions for this passage…

  9. Cause and Effect: Part II • Question: • Increased height is a consequence of many factors. Which reason is probably the most important? • Better medical care • Healthier mothers • Better food • Elimination of childhood diseases

  10. Cause and Effect: Part II • Question: • Increased height is a consequence of many factors. Which reason is probably the most important? • Better medical care • Healthier mothers • Better food • Elimination of childhood diseases

  12. Cause and Effect: Part II Now let’s look at filling out the graphic organizers for this article… Graphic Organizer Example 1 Graphic Organizer Example 2

  13. Cause and Effect: Part II In a selection the author will often tell why something happened. For example, the author may say that fish died because of pollution in the water. Or the author may say the main reason that Columbus sailed to America was to find a new way to China and India. The author may talk

  14. Cause and Effect: Part II Continued…about many factors that lead children to want to go to college. As you read you should keep in mind what happened and the reasons for it. Many terms or phrases like the ones I will list for you in this next slide can be used to tell why something happened.

  15. Cause and Effect: Part II Here are some of the terms or phrases: Because of …. As a consequence of These terms or phrases mean about the same thing:chief cause …. Principal factor As a result of …. Explained by Major reason …. Best explanation
