  2. JSTOR JSTOR, a research platform that enables discovery, access, and preservation of scholarly content, merged with ITHAKA in 2009 and is a service of the organization. ITHAKAis a not-for-profit organization that helps the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. We pursue this mission by providing innovative services that aid in the adoption of these technologies and that create lasting impact.

  3. About Global Plants • Global Plants is a comprehensive database of plant type specimens and complementary content • Contains the contributed collections of more than 270 herbaria from 70 countries • The largest of its kind—more than two million plant type specimens and other foundational materials • Built through the Global Plants Initiative (GPI), an international partnership wherein herbaria and JSTOR work together to create a shared database of information and images of plants worldwide

  4. About the Global Plants Initiative (GPI) • GPI represents a 10 year collaborative effort • Began with a small group of herbaria, then called the African Access Initiative, expanded to incorporate herbaria and plants from Latin America, and then became global in scale • Today, GPI partner organizations from Argentina to Zimbabwe capture data and use digital technologies to create high resolution images of type specimens from their collections Global Plants partners at 2013 Annual Meeting held by Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama City, Republic of Panama

  5. About GPI and JSTOR • In partnership with JSTOR, GPI is building a sustainable resource that the international scientific community can rely upon. • JSTOR acts as the virtual hub, providing the production systems, support for digitizing the types, and a platform for discovery • Global Plants has tripled in size during its development; it is now transitioning from a grant-funded project to a sustainability model that includes financial contributions from partners; JSTOR provides the infrastructure and other services; educational, cultural, governmental, and other research institutions contribute annual fees for access to parts of the database

  6. Features & Functionality • Scientists, students, and others will find tools to help them conduct their research: • Search: Find results quickly through domain-specific filters; search queries based on “The Plant List” • Image viewer: Examine high-resolution images with a newly improved image viewer; measure and save plant information • MyPlants: Save, tag, and share digital objects to your own account • Linking: Discover relevant journal articles on JSTOR, and content from the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), and Tropicos • Commenting: Be part of the scientific discourse—active discussion on plant specimen data by experts in the field • Stable Links: Locate, cite, and create stable links to type specimens  • Compilation page: Index page to view all the resources in the database related to a particular plant name or taxon in one place
