  3. Partner Share • Discuss the question of the week with your partner. • When have you taken a risk by helping someone else? Why? • When might helping another person involve a sacrifice?

  4. Let’s Talk About • Turn to page 202-203 • Let’s look at the pictures. • Why is one hiker helping the other? • People often help others in order to accomplish something.

  5. Let’s Talk About • The Coast guard is trying to rescue people from the ocean. What risks do they take? • Coast guard rescuers are trained to help in these situations, but the rescuers are still very brave.

  6. Let’s Talk About • These soldiers are on the island of Iwo Jima during World War II. • What is their goal? • What are the risks in helping others?

  7. Listen: The story Number the Stars tells about the risks a family takes to save a Jewish girl during World War II. Listen for the words: • Poses • Officers • unwavering

  8. Amazing Words • Unwavering- steady, resolute, not moving • Would an Olympic swimmer be unwavering in pursuit of the finish line?

  9. Amazing Words • Officers- someone who commands other people in the armed forces • The officer had this troops make a ten-mile hike as part of their training.

  10. Amazing Words • Poses- when someone poses they are pretending to be someone they aren’t • My sister poses as a rock star and dances in front of a mirror.

  12. Sequencing • Sequence is the order in which events take place from their first to last. • What clue words may show sequence? • First, next, then, finally, • What clue words tell you that events are occurring at the same time? • While, at the same time

  14. Vocabulary • Canteen- a small container for carrying water or other drinks • The soldier took a final swig from his canteen. • Confederacy- a group of countries or states working together • The southern states wanted to create a new nation, the confederacy, independent of the United States.

  15. Vocabulary • Glory-great praise and honor They were fighting for freedom and glory. • Quarrel-a fight with words • The two states had been having a quarrel for a long time.

  16. Vocabulary • Rebellion- a fight against your own government The federal government sought to put down the rebellion and restore the country as one union. • Stallion-a male horse • He had a tall stallion in the barn.

  17. Vocabulary • Union-a joining of two or more people or things into one • They were hoping to bring the states back to a single union.

  19. Spelling • This week we are practicing spelling words with irregular plurals by adding –s or –es. • Let’s take our pretest now.
