  1. 1 Nephi 3-4 The Book of Mormon

  2. From a boy to a Man • GIRLS: write down their definition of a real man. • BOYS: write down definition of real woman. • 1 Nephi 2:16- Nephi is exceedingly young (a boy) • 1 Nephi 4:31- Nephi is a man. • What happened to Nephi between these two verses? • Read a column between 1Ne 2:16 and 1 Ne 4:31. Create a list of things that turned Nephi into a man.

  3. From a boy to a Man • What is the furthest any of you have ever traveled on foot? • Read 1 Ne 3:1-3. • Distance from Jerusalem to the Red Sea is 180 miles + 3 days. (12-14 days one way). Why not a shopping list? • Zion’s camp principle. • Ever had a trial and didn’t know why it was happening at the time, but realized it’s blessing after it was over?

  4. Making Decisions • President Harold B. Lee counseled: • “You must learn to walk to the edge of the light, and perhaps a few stepsinto the darkness [the unknown], and you will find that the light willappear and move ahead of you” (in Lucile C. Tate, Boyd K. Packer:A Watchman on the Tower [1995], 137–38).

  5. From a boy to a Man • VIDEO: President Monson, Will We Be Willing (1:54)

  6. Making Decisions • 1st attempt: (luck)1 Ne 3:9-14 • What about verse 7? How would you persuade your brothers to go back after a death threat? (Vs 16-20) • 2nd attempt: (money) 1 Ne 3:22-26 • 1 Nephi 3:28-31 Why didn’t the angel convert them? • 3rd attempt: (spirit) 1 Ne 4:5-10 • Talk Nephi into killing Laban (4:11) • Elder Holland’s account • How to make decisions: D&C 9:7-9. • Another principle: decisions change with time and circumstance (missions, marriage, career) through the Spirit.

  7. Making Decisions • Joseph Smith: “God said, ‘Thou shalt not kill;’ at another time He said, ‘Thou shalt utterly destroy.’ This is the principle on which the government of heaven is conducted—by revelation adapted to the circumstances in which the children of the kingdom are placed. Whatever God requires is right, no matter what it is, although we may not see the reason thereof till long after the events transpire” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith [1976], 256).

  8. Making Decisions • Chop off the head: 1 Ne 4:15-18. • How does Nephi get the plates home? • (summarize the story for us) • Oaths. Why make Zoram make an oath?

  9. Making Decisions • "I have been asked what I mean by 'word of honor.' I will tell you. Place me behind prison walls--walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground--there is a possibility that in some way or another I may escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of the circle? No. Never! I'd die first!“ • (Karl G. Maeser, as quoted in the BYU Honor Code)

  10. Making Decisions • Did they read the scriptures on the 14 day journey home? How did Nephi feel when he read Exo21:12-13?

  11. Ponder a situation you are currently facing in which the Lord’s requirements are difficult: The Lord WILL help you ‘cut off a head’! 1 Nephi 3-4 The Book of Mormon
