  2. Chapter1 Two men walk along the path near the river.

  3. Their names were George and Lennie.

  4. George is small, wiry, and sharped-featured.Lennie is large and awkward.

  5. They both dressed in denim farmhand attire.

  6. Lennie stops to drink from the river.

  7. Lennie has a dead mouse in his hand. George sees it and gets mad. Lennie promises that he didn’t mean to kill it.

  8. George throws the dead mouse away.

  9. George warns Lennie and says,“Behave yourself!” George tells Lennie that if he gets into any trouble while they are at the new ranch, then he needs to run for the clearing where he will be safe.

  10. George complains to himself; “I will be better off if I did not have to take care of Lennie.”

  11. George knew Aunt Clara. When she died, George had to start taking care of Lennie.

  12. George liked to play jokes on Lennie, but didn’t realize others made fun of him.

  13. Chapter 2 George and Lennie arrive at the ranch. They to go to the bunkhouse.

  14. Candy is a swamper who warns George and Lennie about their boss.

  15. Candy has an old sheep dog he raised from a pup. The dog was now very, very old. He is blind and smells real bad.

  16. Candy says; “The boss is mad because you were suppose to arrive the night before.”

  17. The boss arrives and questions Lennie and George about their work history and skills.

  18. Lennie stayed quiet while George answers for him, but the boss grows suspicious about Lennie’s ability to speak.

  19. The boss was satisfied with George and Lennie’s work history so they both started work right after supper.

  20. Curley is the boss’s son and enters and sizes up to George.

  21. Curley fist his hands and assumes a fighter’s stance. He wants to know if George and Lennie are new guys.

  22. Candy says, “Curley likes to pick fights and hates big guys. He was a lightweight fighter.”

  23. Curley has gotten worse since his marriage. Curley’s wife is pretty but she has “got the eye” and flirts with Slim and Carlson.

  24. George tells Lennie, “Stay away from Curley and not to speak to him.” George says, “if Curley punches you, let him have it.”

  25. Curley’s wife comes into the bunkhouse looking for Curley. Slim tells her that he saw Curly go into the house. Curley’s wife leaves the bunkhouse.

  26. George says, “She is a tramp.”Lennie responds, “She is purty.”George warns Lennie, “Keep away from her, just like you are suppose to keep away from Curley.”

  27. Lennie says, “I don’t like this place, George. This is not a good place.” George reminds Lennie, “ We must stay long enough to make enough money to buy our own farm.”

  28. Carlson enters into the bunkhouse and ask Slim about his new puppies. Lennie overheard the conversation and asks George if he could he have a puppy too.

  29. Carlson wants to replace Candy’s old dog who is arthritic and barely can see or walk.

  30. Supper! Lennie gets off his bunk and as he approaches the door, Curley returns looking for his wife.

  31. George said, “She already came looking for you.” George is afraid he will get tangled with Curley as they leave for supper.

  32. Chapter 3 Alone in the bunkhouse, George thanks Slim for giving Lennie a pup.

  33. Carlson complains about Candy’s dog. Candy allowed Carlson to execute the dog.

  34. Curley went looking for his wife in the barn and Whit and Carlson follows him, hoping for a fight.

  35. Slim is angry at Curley for constantly asking about his wife. Curley looking for someone to fight.

  36. Curley picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully. George tells Lennie to fight back.

  37. Lennie crushed all the bones in Curley hands.

  38. Slim wants to get Curley to the doctor, but warns Curley that if he tells on Lennie and gets him fired, they will spread the news about how Curley’s hand really got hurt.

  39. Lennie was afraid of what he did. He was afraid that George would not let him tend to the rabbits when they get their farm.

  40. George tells Lennie, “It is not your fault; you will get to tend the rabbits.” He sends Lennie to wash his face.

  41. Chapter 4 Crooks is a black-stable hand, proud, bitter and caustically funny.

  42. Crooks tells Lennie he is playing with the puppies too much!

  43. While some of the men were out, Candy’s wife comes into the bunkhouse. Crooks tells her to leave before she gets them in trouble.

  44. Chapter Five: Lennie is in the barn petting one of the puppies. Sadly, the puppy is dead. Lennie killed it because he was too rough with it.

  45. Curley’s wife comes in and sees Lennie with the dead puppy. Lennie knows he isn’t suppose to talk to her but she tells him it’s alright.

  46. She gets closer and closer to Lennie. She tells Lennie that she is soft like the puppy. She tells Lennie to feel her soft skin and silky hair.

  47. Lennie reaches to touch her hair. His hands are so big that he gets his fingers all tangled up in it. The women tries to get away. Lennie gets scared and holds her tighter and tighter. Then her body goes limp.

  48. Lennie covers her body with hay. He runs away from the farm to the clearing where George will find him and he will be safe.

  49. Candy finds the woman's dead body. He tells George, who immediately knows what happened. George is afraid for Lennie. He knew they would put him jail, or beat him, or hang him.

  50. All of the men come into the barn. They all know what happened . Curley wants to kill Lennie. He gets his gun and goes after him.
