  1. Encounters with Jesus in John’s Gospel: 3. The OutsiderJohn 4: 1 - 42

  2. An Outsider... ...because of her gender Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman.John 4: 27

  3. One should not talk with a woman on the street, not even with his own wife, and certainly not with someone else’s wife, because of the gossip of men. It is forbidden to give a woman any greeting. Rabbinic Citation

  4. An Outsider... ...because of her race ...a Samaritan woman came to draw water (John 4: 7) 2 Kings 17: 24 – 41

  5. An Outsider... ...because of her race They worshipped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought.2 Kings 17: 33

  6. An Outsider... ...because of her race Even while these people were worshipping the Lord, they were serving their idols. To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.2 Kings 17: 41

  7. An Outsider... ...because of her race ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’John 4: 9

  8. An Outsider... ...because of her beliefs Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.John 4: 20

  9. An Outsider... ...because of her beliefs The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.Deut 18: 15

  10. An Outsider... ...because of her beliefs I know that Messiah’ (called Christ) ‘is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.John 4: 25

  11. An Outsider... ...because of her circumstances The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.John 4: 18

  12. I was thinking about all the relationships I’ve been in, and why each one of them failed, and it was as if with each one another part of me was torn away until I’m left wondering whether there’s enough of me left to ever love someone properly again. Douglas Coupland

  13. An Outsider... ...because of her sin The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.John 4: 18

  14. An Outsider... ... running on empty a Samaritan woman came to draw waterJohn 4: 7

  15. My secret is that I need God-that I am sick and can no longer make it alone. I need God to help me give, because I no longer seem to be capable of giving; to help me be kind, as I no longer seem capable of kindness; to help me love, as I seem beyond being able to love.Douglas Coupland

  16. An Outsider who comes home ... by recognising truth He would have given you living water (10) The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (14) I who speak to you am he (26)

  17. An Outsider who comes home ... by recognising truth You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. John 4: 22

  18. An Outsider who comes home ... by meeting the saviour Now he had to go through Samaria John 4: 4

  19. I will ask the Father and he will send you another ‘Paraclete’ (comforter).John 14:16. The comforter comes not to make us comfortable, but to make us missionaries.Michael Green.

  20. Each week for a year I would walk step by step across that football pitch and help Brian pick up balls and cones. How small those steps felt! Was I helping at all? The whole experience seemed like an experience in spiritual water-treading.

  21. “Oh, I knew it would turn into this! I just knew someday it would land here. I know plenty about your church…, and the whole thing frustrates me. God is not part of my life, church is not part of my life, and I’d just as soon take the whole thing off the agenda.”

  22. “I just want to thank you for all those times you walked across the field and opened yourself up. Really, thanks.” Jesus made himself nothing… Humbled himself… Became obedient to death on a cross.

  23. Let’s ask ourselves… Do you need a fresh season with Jesus at the well? Are you running on empty? Who are the outsiders that Jesus is asking us to ‘go through Samaria’ to meet – to ‘walk across the room’ for? Are you willing to let the comforter make you uncomfortable?
