Two types of sins nu 15

Two types of sins (Nu.15)

1. Unintentional (Nu.15:27-29)

2. Intentional (30-31)

  • Worth it to him? family? brothers?

    • Hb.10:…26-29…

      • Nu.15:32-36

Mortal and venial?

Big and little (Ga.5:19-21)?

Presumptuous sins

Presumptuous Sins

“Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion over me…”– Ps.19:13

Contrast: Genesis 20 . . . Mark 6

“And especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed…”– 2 Pt.2:10

How to recognize presumption

How to recognize presumption?

Daring (ASV); bold (ESV). “One who dares, one who is brazen; headstrong daredevils, shameless… The word smacks of the reck-less daring that defies God and man” (R-R) Bold-faced, insolent man (Zerwick)

John 8 1 11

John 8:1-11

  • Unjust: where is the man?

  • Woman: pawn in hands of hypocrites

  • They hope He explains away 7th com-mandment so they can break 6th

  • Some quote Jn.8:7 to justify sins; not Lord’s intent

Stoning

He that is w/o sin… Dt.17:7, witnesses must be free from same crime

Cast the first stone. No one here threatens to throw a stone (cf. 59)

Stone her, 5

Cast first stone, 7

(Physical jdgt.)

Witnesses do notstone her, 10

Lord does not, 11a

Sin no more, 11b

Was it wrong to callher a sinner?

But i mean it proverbially

“But I mean it proverbially”

Proverb:

“Be quick to blame, criticize, or punish”

Problem:

All who condemn

are guilty

Those who condemn the ones who condemn do the very thing they condemn: they also throw stones

Jn 8 7 mt 7 1 2

Jn.8:7 – Mt.7:1-2

  • Jesus condemns only uncharitable judgments and fault-finding spirit that condemns others but overlooks one’s own sins (Ro.14:10; Ja.2:13)

General principles, not universalprohibitions (1 Co.5:3, 12-13)

Both passages require us to make judgments (Mt.7:3-5; Jn.8:7)

Stoning

Judge not, that you be not judged…

Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye – Mt.7:1, 5

So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first – Jn.8:7
