MOLECULES WITH MORE THAN ONE STEREOCENTER • Diastereoisomers are stereoisomers that are not mirror images of each other. • Chiral diastereoisomers have opposite configurations at some (one or more) chirality centers, but have same configuration at others. • By contrast, enantiomers have opposite configuration at all chiral centers. • Now, assign R & S configuration of chirality centers of chloramphenicol (antibiotic)

MOLECULES WITH MORE THAN ONE STEREOCENTER • MESO COMPOUNDS • Compounds that are achiral, yet they contain chiral center, are called Meso compound. • Meso compound (diastereoisomers) are identical compound. • As example, Tartaric acid exists in three stereoisomeric forms 2 enantiomers and 1 diastereomeric form.
