DEFINITION OF HALAL & HARAM • Halal is something allowed by Islamic doctrine (Al Qur’an, Hadist and Fatwa) • Halal Food is food that can be consumed according to Islamic doctrine • Haram is something not allowed by Islamic doctrine • Haram Food is food that can not be consumed according to Islamic doctrine • Example : • Specific animals including all parts of the animal (meat, bone, etc.): pig, dog; Animal which lives in two ecosystems(frog, crocodile, etc); Wild animals (tiger, elephant, etc), owl, eagle • Dead animal • Halal animal which is not slaughtered thru the Islamic way (without saying the name of “ALLAH”) • Blood • Alcohol Beverages

DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR HALAL ACCREDITATION (NEW PRODUCT) The Documents for HALAL accreditation are : • Information of raw material composition of the product • Matrix of all raw materials, brands and name of suppliers of materials used in the product • Raw Materials/Ingredients specification from suppliers • Halal Certificate of raw materials from LPPOM MUI or Islamic Organization Approved by AIFDC-ICU / LP POM MUI • Process flow chart and finished goods description

PROBLEM : ACCIDENTAL USE OF NONHALAL MEAT • MAIN RAW MATERIAL FOR PROCESSED MEATS IN INDONESIA IS BEEF IMPORTED FROM NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA. • IMPORTED BEEF FROM THESE TWO COUNTRIES ARE HALAL-ACCREDITED. • IN 2007, A SUPERVISOR DISCOVERED MEAT CARTONS BEARING THE SIGN “NONHALAL”. • ALL PRODUCTION IMMEDIATELY STOPPED, ALL FINISHED PRODUCTS AND WORK IN PROCESS MATERIALS SEGREGATED • MUI ALERTED; HALAL AUDITORS DISPATCHED TO PLANT • CONTAMINATED PRODUCTS AND NONHALAL RAW MATERIALS DESTROYED • SUPPLIER BLACKLISTED, INSPECTED AND RE-ACCREDITED

HOW AN INDONESIAN COMPANY CAN PRODUCE BOTH HALAL AND NONHALAL PRODUCTS (PT SOEJASCH IN BALI) • PT SOEJASCH PRODUCES HALAL PROCESSED MEATS UNDER THE BRAND “NIKMAT” AND NONHALAL PROCESSED MEATS UNDER THE BRAND “MAMA’S” • IT HAS A FACTORY IN BALI • THE FACTORY COMPOUND IS DIVIDED INTO TWO COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT PLANTS, ONE FOR HALAL AND THE OTHER FOR NONHALAL • DELIVERY OF NONHALAL PRODUCTS ARE DONE USING DEDICATED TRUCKS; NO CO-LOADING WITH HALAL PRODUCTS. • STORAGE OF NONHALAL PRODUCTS IS ALSO SEPARATE FROM THE HALAL PRODUCTS

  13. CONCLUSIONS • TO MUSLIMS, THE ISSUE OF HALAL IS VERY SERIOUS • IN A MUSLIM COUNTRY, HALAL ACCREDITATION IS A MUST • HALAL ACCREDITATION CAN BE BURDENSOME BUT THE INDONESIAN HALAL ACCREDITATION BODY IS UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICAL.
