  1. 2-4 Solving equations with integers!!!! By: Mr. Graham aka El Capitan

  2. Adding and Subtracting to solve equations It is the exact same thing as solving regular equations, except now we are using positive and negative integers!!!!! George says, YOU’VE DONE THIS BEFORE!!!!!!! And he still likes bananas.

  3. Adding and subtracting • Solve • y + 8 = 6 How do I undo addition? • - 8 = - 8 From both sides • y = 6 – 8 KCO  6 + -8 • Follow addition rules!!!!! (signs are different, subtract and keep the sign of the larges value) • 8 – 6 = 2 ( 8 is bigger, so it will be a -2) • y = -2 • Check, -2 + 8 = 6 • True!!!

  4. Adding and subtracting • -5 + t = -25 (how do I undo addition?) • -(-5) = -(-5) • - 5 – (-5) becomes -5 + 5 which = 0, so we are left with just t on that side • -25 – (-5) becomes -25 + 5 which = -20 • So t = -20 • Check, -5 + (-20) = -25 • True!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Adding and subtracting • a – 17 = -4 (how do I undo subtraction?) • +17 = +17 • a = - 4 + 17 (signs are different so I subtract and keep the sign of the bigger value) 17 – 4 = 13, 17 is bigger than 4, so it’s a positive 13 • a = 13 • Check, 13 – 17 = 4 • 13 + (-17) = 4 • True!!!!!

  6. X and ÷ equations with integers • Solve • 17b = -51 (how do I undo multiplication?) • 17b = -51 • 17 = 17 • 17’s cancel out leaving just b and -51÷ 17 = -3 • So b = -3 • Check, 17(-3) = -51 • True!!!!!

  7. X and ÷ equations with integers • k = -1 (how do I undo division?) • -7 • -7 · k = -1 · -7 • -7 • -7 and -7 cancel leaving just k and – 1 · -7 = 7 • So k = 7 • Check, 7 ÷ -7 = -1 • True!!!!!!

  8. What if I end up with a negative variable?????? YOU CAN’T HAVE A NEGATIVE VARIABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Negative variable???? • -x + 5 = 10 (start like normal, how do I undo addition?) • -x + 5 = 10 (Right, subtraction) • - 5 = - 5 • -x = 5 (GEORGE SAID NO NEGATIVE VARIABLES!!) • Multiply both sides by (-1) • (-1)(-x) = (5)(-1) • x = -5
