1. Mrs. Packer’s Class2010-2011 Welcome to Second Grade Curriculum Night! Thank you for being here!

2. Homework • Homework goes home on Friday (due following Friday) • Homework packet stays in OCEAN binder each night • Behavior sheet is included on Monday for prior week (PLEASE sign and return on Tuesdays) • Spelling words for week are included in homework packet (and OCEAN binder) • Follow the schedule throughout the week (the schedule can be flexible!) • Reading material goes home each Monday and Thursday • Bring back to school the following day!! • PLEASE MAKE SURE TO TAKE OUT LAST WEEK’S HOMEWORK!!! 

3. Behavior Log • Starts each day on a positive note! BEHAVIOR PLAN: • 1) Verbal warning • 2) Tally on clipboard • 3) Three tallies= 2nd grade recess missed • 4) Student calls home to parent • Home-school “Team”/Communication • Goes home on Mondays! PLEASE: Sign and return on Tuesday!

5. Curriculum: Spelling • New words in homework packet • Words go with our Harcourt Reading Series • Phonics skill practiced all week in class • Dictation sentences practiced and tested • Spelling tests on Fridays • Spelling activities are built into homework • Make sure to study the words and dictationsentences with your child each week!!! 

6. Curriculum: Reading • Harcourt Trophies Reading Series • Author Studies • Word Work/Phonics Skills • Leveled reading groups within the classroom- fluid and flexible • Guided/Whole Group Instruction • DAILY 5 --- Small Group Reading Instruction • Parent/Student/Teacher Partnership • PLEASE make sure that your child reads OUT LOUD to your for at least 10 minutes per night!!! • Reading material goes home (Monday and Thursday) Please make sure these books are returned the following morning.  • Don’t forget to log these minutes at the bottom of the homework packet!

Curriculum: Math • Scott Foresman Series • Terc—Investigations (Abstract-Concrete) • Hands-on Manipulatives • Problem Solving • Depth of Knowledge Key Concepts Covered in Grade 2 • Mental Math Strategies • Graphing • Number Patterns/Number Sense • Money • Time • Adding/Subtracting 2-3 digit numbers with and without regrouping (“borrowing”) • Fractions • Geometry • Measurement • Beginning Multiplication
