Reading Curriculum Reading Streets Guided Reading • Students are flexibly grouped across the grade level to insure individual instructional needs are met. • The new curriculum is aligned with Common Core Standards. • Students will have whole group instruction for an 45 minutes every day. • Concepts will be introduced and vocabulary will be studied. • Students will have small group instruction at their guided reading level for 30 minutes every day. • They will do activities in word analysis, comprehension and Independent reading daily. Language Arts • Spelling Tests will be given on Fridays. • 6 Traits of writing will be taught: Organization, Voice, Conventions, Focus, Word Choice and Sentence Fluency

  4. Math Curriculum Math IMPORTANT • Number Sense • Algebra • Ratios • Geometry • Fractions • Students need to know their math facts • Adding and Subtracting • Multiplication • Division

Social Studies Science • We will focus on United States History from the American Revolution to The Civil War • We will focus • The Scientific Method • Biomes • Force and Motion • The Human Body • Systems • Nervous • Skeleton • Muscles Second Step Second Step teaches children how to get along with others. We focus on Empathy, Emotional Management, and Problem Solving.

Homework • Students need to fill in assignment notebook daily. • Reading Logs: Every day reading increases knowledge! • 20 minutes every night • Parents must sign the calendar • Math Logs • Activity on the calendar • Parents must sign the calendar • Any work not completed in class. • Every now and than there might be a project. • **The students should not have more than 50 minutes of homework daily. NO homework on weekends or holidays will be given, unless working on a project.

  7. 5th Grade along with the entire Ellis staff follows this behavior time line. PBIS

  8. Intervention/Enrichment (I/E) • 45 minutes each day • Students grouped based off individual needs. • Students currently at or above grade level expectations are scheduled into an enrichment activity, such as: special art, physical education, music or school news paper classes. • Students in need of extra help are scheduled into an academic block where they receive focused instruction in their specific need area. • This year we have 5 intervention cycles to meet the changing needs of our students.

  9. MAP testing • Measure of Academic Progress (MAP)testing is taken 3 times a year. • It is an adaptive test that will inform our instruction and allow us to better meet the individual needs of the students. • Testing begins Wednesday, 8/28. • Our testing time is on Friday’s at 1:30 • We are starting with Reading

  10. Family Education Nights • Once a month • Help parents to support their students at home. • Held in the evenings • First event: September 10th 7:00 pm

  11. Miscellaneous Information • Absences: please call school before 9 am if your child is going to be absent. • Treats: any treats brought to school must be store bought and only enough for our homeroom. • Students should have water bottles every day. • Dimissal: • School ends at 3:00, we teach until 3:00 • Students will not be out of building until around 3:05 • Car riders are students who are being picked up in the circle driveway after school • Parent pick up is when a parent walks to the school and picks up their child. These students are walkers.
