  3. NIOSH PPT Program Vision and Mission The VISION is to be the leading provider of quality, relevant, and timely PPT research, training, and evaluation. The MISSION of the PPT program is to prevent work-related injury, illness and death by advancing the state of knowledge and application of personal protective technologies (PPT). An estimated 20 million workers use PPE on a regular basis to protect themselves from job hazards.

  6. NA PPT Program Evaluation Recommendations - June 2008 1. Implement and sustain a comprehensive national PPT program (3 high priority issues) 2. Establish PPT research Centers of Excellence and increase extramural PPT research 3. Enhance the respirator certification process 4. Increase research on the use and usability of PPT (2 high priority issues) 5. Assess PPT use and effectiveness in the workplace using a life-cycle approach

Conduct outreach programs for optimal use and acceptance of PPT by workersImpact • Conducted over 70 outreach activities, reaching thousands of participants, to translate and disseminate research results and increase PPT awareness • Three stakeholder meetings disseminated updated PPT information, generated input to PPT program activities, and fostered collaborations • Developed training seminars for NIOSH ERCs with an emphasis on healthcare and emergency response programs • Realized over 275 visits per week to the Respirator Trusted Source webpage

Develop innovative PPT designs and test methods to improve comfort, fit and usabilityProgress • Developed state-of-the-art headforms for testing PPT and approaches for analyzing 2D and 3D data • Completed facial anthropometric data collection on 50% of subjects (110 subjects) in respirator fit study • Completed hand, head, and foot scans of 950 subjects for firefighter sizing research • Initiated seven research projects to address comfort, fit and usability issues
