  1. On December 6, 1989 a lone gunman entered l’EcolePolytechnique de Montreal and began a rampage that would last nearly 20 minutes....and still resonates today.

  2. He separated the women from the men. He opened fire on the women. Fourteen women died.

  3. This act of violence shocked the nation. In 1991 the Government of Canada designated December 6th as Canada’s annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

  4. That same year Jack Layton co-founded the White Ribbon Movement to remember the victims of December 6th and protest against violence against women.

  5. Violence against women remains a serious problem in Canada, from acts of hatred, to culturally based offences, sexual harassment, and domestic abuse.

  6. Violence is a leading cause of workplace injuries. Between 2008 and 2012, violence represented an average of 11% of all workplace injury claims, in BC healthcare.
