  1. Ethnic Identity Kim & Gelfand • Learning Check • What is the independent variable? • What are the dependent variables? • What is the moderating variable? • What are the 3 hypotheses?

  2. Hypotheses 1 & 2 Positive Inferences re: Org Diversity Emphasis on Recruitment Brochures Ethnic Identity Intention to accept job offer

  3. Null Hypothesis 3 Positive Inferences re: Org Diversity Emphasis on Recruitment Brochures Diversity Emphasis on Recruitment Brochures * Ethnic Identity Race Intention to accept job offer

  4. Method • Participants • 238 Business & Psychology Majors • 110 men, 128 women

  5. Method • Design • Participants randomly assigned to one of two conditions • Diversity initiative brochure (experimental) • No Diversity initiative brochure (control) • Participants’ study major not related to any of the variables measured in study • Note: Use of indirect/passive voice not recommended in project papers

  6. Method • Construction of brochures (experimental manipulation) • Brochures written at a general level to • Avoid confusion for participants unfamiliar w/consulting • Permit organizational inferences • Professionally printed • Pilot tested for • Perceived authenticity • Adequacy of information • Content, clarity and length of diversity initiative • Differences in length b/w diversity & non-diversity brochures not addressed

  7. Measures • Inferences re: Organization • Developed from previous research • 16-items • 5-point agree/disagree scale • 4 factors • Reliability=.65 to .75 • Likelihood of accepting a job offer • 2 items • 5-point agree/disagree scale • Reliability=.75

  8. Measures • Ethnic Identity • Validated by previous research • 12-items • 5-point agree/disagree scale • 2 highly correlated sub-scales • Reliability=.72

  9. Measures • Manipulation checks • 4 items • 5-point agree/disagree scale • Reliability=.95 • Significant mean differences across the experimental conditions (One-way ANOVA) • How to check for….?? • ethnicity by diversity condition differences? • Gender by ethnicity by diversity condition differences?

  10. Descriptive Results • Reliability analyses • Note absence of reliabilities of dichotomous variables • Mean differences on manipulation checks • Means, sds & correlations • Note absence of means & sds of dichotomous variables • Significance of correlations not presented

  11. Regression Steps • Hierarchical regression • Dummy code categorical variables • -1, 0, 1 etc. depending on levels • Enter main effects first • Before entering moderator variable, convert the predictor variables (not dvs) into z-scores, then multiply them with each other • Enter 2-way interactions after main effects • Enter 3-way interactions last

  12. Regression Results • Main effect of ethnic identity explains 25-55% of additional variance in DVs • Interaction b/w ethnic identity and diversity condition is significant for some dvs (ethnic identity moderates relation b/w diversity condition & some dvs) • Explains 1-3% additional variance in socioemotional references re: org & likelihood of accepting job offer • Note on β, R2

  13. Displaying Interactions from Regressions
