  1. Science Assessment Timeline 2012-2013 - OAA and OGT will test using the 2002 standards 2013-2014 – OAA and OGT will test only areas that overlap both the 2002 standards and the 2011 Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science. 2014-2015 – Next Generation Assessments will test only the 2011 Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science.

  2. 2014-2015 Next Generation Assessments: Science Assessments will be state-developed. Testing in grades 5&8 will cover grade level standards only. End of course exams will be administered for High School Physical Science and Biology.

  3. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: 9-12 Science Introductory High School Sciences Physical Science Biology Advanced Sciences Chemistry Environmental Science Physical Geology Physics

  4. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: 9-12 Science Each syllabus and model curriculum consists of: Course Description Science Inquiry and Application Course Content – an outline of major topics Content Elaboration – in each major topic Expectations for Learning: Cognitive Demands Visions into Practice – examples of tasks that students may perform Instructional Strategies and Resources Common Misconceptions Diverse learners Classroom Portals

  5. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: PreK-4 • Observe and ask questions about the natural environment. • Plan and conduct simple investigations. • Employ simple equipment and tools to gather data and extend the senses. • Use appropriate mathematics with data to construct reasonable explanations. • Communicate about observations, investigations and explanations. • Review and ask questions about the observations and explanations of others

  6. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: 5-8 Identify questions that can be answered through scientific investigations. Design and conduct a scientific investigation. Use appropriate mathematics, tools, and techniques to gather data and information. Analyze and interpret data

  7. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: 5-8 (continued) Develop descriptions, models, explanations, and predictions. Think critically and logically to connect evidence and explanations. Recognize and analyze alternative explanations and predictions. Communicate scientific procedures and explanations.

  8. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: 9-12 Identify questions and concepts that guide scientific investigations. Design and conduct scientific investigations. Use technology and math to improve investigations and communications.

  9. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: 9-12 (continued) Formulate and revise explanations and models using logic and evidence (critical thinking). Recognize and analyze explanations and models. Communicate and support a scientific argument.

  10. Ohio’s New Learning Standards: K-12 Science Science Inquiry and Application: K-12 All students must use the scientific processes with appropriate laboratory safety techniques. All students must use the scientific processes to construct knowledge and understanding in all science content areas.

  11. Next Generation Science StandardsNGSS Currently in final revision. Will identify content and science and engineering practices that all students should learn from kindergarten to high school graduation. The decision to adopt the standards and make them consistent between the states will lie in the hands of the states themselves. http://www.nextgenscience.org
