News from Mrs. Griffin Upcoming Events February Feb. 12 – Lincoln’s Birthday Feb. 13 – TLI Math Test Feb.14 – Valentine’s Party Feb. 14 – Progress Reports Feb. 17 – No School (President’s Day) Feb. 20 – TLI Science Test Feb. 21 – Valentine’s Dance Feb. 22 – Washington’s Birthday What We’re Learning! We are nearing the end of our fractions unit and we will begin working with ratios and algebra this month. We also have a Math Lab that has a Valentine’s Day theme for this month! The solar system is the current topic in Science. Everyone loves this unit and we have a lot of fun exploring the planets, sun, our moon, and the asteroid belt. This unit has a lot of video clips and games that go along with it. We have been learning to do Mystery Skypes! We connect with other classes via Twitter and using our webcam, we try to guess the state they live in or a mystery number unique to their class before they guess ours. The challenge is that we can only ask yes or no questions. Ask your child about the fun we have been having. Birthdays Feb. 2 – Reshard Feb. 8 – Cheyenne Feb. 20 – Thalia Reminder: There are several math “Show Me” videos in your Edmodo backpack. Please refer to these step by step examples when doing your work. It doesn’t hurt to have a refresher! Monthly Teacher Tip The Common Core Weekly Review (CCWR) sheets and Math Boxes (MB) are a review for all skills covered in 5th grade. A few 4th grade skills are included as refreshers. We go over them each day, so be sure to correct your answers. The quiz on Friday comes directly from these papers, and I take them both up at the end of the week for a grade. This could help bring your grade up if you are struggling with a particular math topic.
