  1. What is it? “La Pasquella…”

  2. The Epiphany is one of the main religious celebrations of the year, which the Catholic Church celebrates twelve days after Christmas, on Jan. 6th

  3. In the popular corruption the word Epiphany in Florence had become "Befania" indicating the celebration that begins the Carnival,

  4. with the first masked parades that derived directly from medieval sacred representations, or "mysteries", dedicated to the Magi’s travel to Bethlehem.

  5. In this ancient form of representation of the "Befana", groups of young people dressed appropriately, and played scenes that related to the religious meaning of the celebration.

  6. “Pasquella” is composed by songs belonging to the rituals of the winter solstice,

  7. the practice of those songs in our province is threatened with extinction, while it’s still living in other regions of the centre Italy

  8. It's one of the most ancient collection ritual songs and belongs to that field of testimonies that are now disappearing, but represents a pill of wisdom in which the peasants used to hide their truth.

  9. Teams of singers named "Pasquaroli" went from home to home singing strophes as wishes for health, prosperity and abundance, in exchange for small offerings of money, food and wine.

  10. They usually sung on the last day of the year and  on the night of EpiphanyThe groups were formed of three (only male) elements: fisarmonica, guitar, drums (triangle) and voices.

  11. The ritual of Pasquella coincides with a very precise date of the agricultural calendar.

  12. It is a propitiatory ritual linked to the beliefs and the pagan rituals related to the cycle of nature that dies and born and rises and it synthesizes the same cycle of life...

  13. it is a propitiation form related to the ancient fertility rites.

  14. The welcoming and offers reserved for the "Pasquaroli", are symbolically reserved for the Gods: Gods of fertility, and family welfare. They will ensure protection and good luck for the year to come.

  15. Now these ancient rituals are inexorably disappearing because of the deep transformations of society and in particular the fragmentation of the peasants.

  16. “Pasqua, Pasqua è menutalu Segnore ce l’è mannatace l’è mannata chen tanta allegriaviva Pasqua e la BifaniaSe me dete na saggiccia i ve diche padrona riccae se vu nen me la detei ve diche padrona ingrate”.
