  4. Nikolaus und die Schiffer Zur Zeit, als Nikolaus Bischof von Myra war, fuhren Seeleute mit ihrem Schiff einmal über das Mittelmeer. Eines Tages brach ein furchtbarer Sturm los. Der Himmel wurde ganz finster, und die Wellen tobten. Der Sturm packte das Segel und riss es in viele Stücke. Dann zerbrach er auch den Mast. Die Wellen schlugen über den Bootsrand, und bald stand das Schiff voll Wasser. In ihrer Not dachten die Seeleute an den Bischof von Myra und schrieen laut: "Nikolaus, hilf uns! Nikolaus, hilf uns!" Da sahen sie plötzlich einen fremden Mann am Steuer ihres Schiffes stehen. Er nickte ihnen freundlich und beruhigend zu und lenkte das Schiff sicher durch die Fluten. So erreichten sie trotz des furchtbaren Unwetters sicher das Land. Als sie aber dort ausgestiegen waren, war der furchtlose und freundliche Helfer verschwunden. Da liefen sie zur Kirche nach Myra, um Gott für ihre wunderbare Rettung zu danken. Wie erstaunten sie aber, als sie dort den Bischof Nikolaus erblickten. Er und kein anderer war es gewesen, der in der Nacht ihr Schiff sicher durch das Unwetter gelenkt hatte. Da fielen sie vor dem Bischof auf die Knie und dankten ihm von Herzen. Der Bischof aber sagte: "Denkt an die Geschichte von Jesus, der so stark ist, dass ihm sogar der Sturm auf dem See Genezareth gehorchte. Wenn ihr Jesus vertraut, wird euch nichts geschehen!" Die Seeleute machten Nikolaus aber zu ihrem Schutz-Patron. Und der heilige Nikolaus ist der Schutz-Patron bis heute. The sky became very dark, and the waves raged. The tempest packeted the sail and tore it in many pieces. Then it broke also the mast. The waves hit about the boat edge, and soon the ship stood full water. In their need the sailors thought of the bishop of Myra and shouted aloud: "Santa Claus, help us ! Santa Claus, help us!" There they saw an other man suddenly at the steering wheel of their ship stand. He nodded to them in a friendly manner and calmingly and surely led the ship through the flows. So they surely reached the country in spite of the dreadful tempest. When they had gotten out there, however, the fearless and friendly helper had disappeared. There they ran to the church according to Myra in order to thank God for their wonderful rescue. How did they astonish, however, when they glimpsed the bishop there. He and no other who had surely led their ship through the tempest in the night. There they fell before the bishop onto the knees and thanked him from hearts. The bishop, however, said: "Thinks of the history of Jesus, who is so strong that even the tempest obeyed to him on the lake Genezareth. If you trust, nothing will happen to you!" The sailors made Santa Claus to their protection patron, however. And the holy Santa Claus is the protection-patron until today. (From Rolf Krenzer)
