  1. The ISCN:Hosting and future organization Overview of work streams Bernd Kasemir, Dirctor sustainserv, ISCN program manager

  2. I. The ISCN up to now – an emergingpioneer organization

  3. Start and goal of the ISCN • ISCN established in 2006 • Motivation: In international discussions it became clear that • there was great experience on campus sustainability around the world • but knowledge exchange between continents was limited • Goal: Shared learning to enhance universities’ commitment and capacity • to construct, redesign, and organize their campus sustainably, and to link these initiatives to research and education • to realize landmarks of sustainability in leading universities around the world

  4. Work Streams up to now • Working Group I: Awards Program • Leith Sharp, Claude Siegenthaler • Working Group II: Sustainable Campus Charter Development • Ariane König and Joe Mullinix • Working Group III: Decision Making on Campus Sustainability • Steve Mital and Erika Meins • Working Group IV: Integration of Research, Education, and Facilities • Katja Brundiers and Per Lundquist • Thanks to the co-chairs of these Working Groups and to all group members for their great work!

  5. Hosting up to now The ISCN has been developed under the hosting of the Swiss “Novatlantis – Sustainability in the ETH Domain” Novatlantis has sponsored the lion’s share of the ISCN core organization costs Sustainserv has been contracted to run the core organizational activities (program manager function) Conference host organizations (2007 & 2008 ETHZ, 2009 EPFL,2010 University Luxembourg) have increasingly borne meeting costs While ISCN member organizations have generously contributed their own time and expenses, a membership fee has been discussed but not implemented

  6. Conferences and Symposia • Conferences organized around Working Groups • - 2007, ETH Zurich • - 2008, ETH Zurich • - 2009, EPFL • Planned to go to a 2 year cycle for working group focuse conferences • Symposia focused on a more specific topic or region in between • 2010, ‚Better Campus, Better City‘, Shanghai World Expo, • University of Luxembourg & Tongji University

  7. II. Recent achievements and future development

  8. Key achievements Growing body of best practice experiences, shared at past Conferences and started to be integrated in data base International Sustainable Campus Excellence Awards established in 2009, supporting experience exchange and case compilation Sustainable Campus Charter developed as ISCN-GULF Charter, and signed at World Economic Forum 2010 by GULF members

  9. Suggestion 1: Align WGs and Charter Three nested Charter principles

  10. Suggestion 2: Distinguish between explo-ratory WGs, and structural initiatives WG1 Building focus WG2 Campus focus WG3 Integration focus Awards Charter, Guidelines Data base – web repository These ongoing initiatives are supported by in-depth experience exchanges at the ISCN Conferences and Symposia.

  11. Suggestion 3: Stabilize core organization function as Secretariat, and link to Charter • Tasks of the ISCN Secretariat • Receive and maintain ISCN-GULF Charter endorsements, and share ISCN-GULF Charter Progress Reports within the ISCN and beyond, including at the World Economic Forum GULF meetings • Secure robust framework for ongoing Award program and Working Group activities, communicate ISCN activities to expand network • Instead of more general ISCN membership fees, an ISCN-GULF Charter • membership fee contributes to overall organizational costs. The Swiss • ETHs providing additional core funding.
