  3. What is an NGO? • It’s a private, independent organization • It is non-profit • It is not directed or controlled by any government (non-government) • It is focused on Humanity – with a focus on poverty in grade 5 Carollo

  5. Find your Interest! • What bothers you? • Is there something you see that isn’t right and you wish you could do something about it? • Areas to consider: • Education, orphans, garbage, deforestation, hunger, homelessness and health. Myles

  6. Success Needs These Three Things • The first is passion- what are you interested in? • The second is a person or group of people who share this passion, and the vision to match. • The third is a good relationship with the people you want to help – the beneficiaries. Carollo

Mission Statement Explanation Examples Kiva: “To connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty” AISB: Engages learners in a rigorous and balanced international education, prepares them to realize their full potential, and inspires them to be successful and responsible global citizens • What is the purpose of the organization? • Why do you want to form this NGO? • Explains the target audience • It’s a short description: 1-3 sentences. Accountability Financial Record Keeping • All NGOs need a system for recording where money comes from and how it is used. • You must follow the guidelines and procedures of the school. • It is very important that you use the money you make for the purpose you said you would use it for. This is called being transparent. • Set up an Accounting System. • You also need to inform the public in some way how the money was used. Carollo

  14. Fundraising Plan How can you raise money? • Fundraising does not equal bake sale! • Sell something • Sell your service • Ask for donations • Get sponsorships • Hold an event and charge for entry • Apply for a grant • Many more… Myles

  15. Marketing – Get the Word Out! Who Are You? Information Brochure • Reaching out and becoming known in the community is important. How can you convince them to support your NGO? • PR materials, booklets, nice website, etc. Carollo

  16. Action! What does it mean? Asking others to help by donating used books, toys, clothes. Fundraising to get money to buy what they need. Donating your time and expertise. Changing the way things are done- writing to government, petitions, etc. Advocacy - getting the word of what you are trying to do Changing the way people in the community view others. Writing to a newspaper, magazine. Awareness- Get their stories known. Finding organizations that can help and writing to them. Myles

  17. Think Globally, Act Locally Find a genuine NEED in your own community. Learn from one of the NGO’s that our school supports in the community. NGO Visit next week. Carollo

  20. Investigate the Problem Find out all you can about poverty globally and locally. Why is there a problem? What are others doing to help? What do you think you can do? Myles

  21. Make a Plan Research and inquire to discover the unmet needs of the people you are trying to help Be realistic and specific Myles

  22. Take Action Put your plan into action (you can use the action planning worksheet or come up with your own way to record this). It is important to document your action with photos or videos. Myles

  23. Document Everything Don’t forget to keep track of everything you do. E-mails you send Letters you write (make a copy) Take photos of ‘action’ you take and other parts of the process. Carollo
