    4. Page 2 The atomic mass of nobelium is 259, that is the amount of mass that each of the element’s atoms take up. Nobelium’s Life This element in it’s pure form looks like A piece of metal but is much more dangerous. It radiates energy that can hurt you if you get near it. The element has a very short life until it turns into a different element, this is called it’s half life. Nobelium’s half life is about 3 minutes, that’s not very long! This element is useless for anything other than research because it doesn’t do anything that can make it useful in the short time that it is still nobelium. This is also why Nobelium isn’t usually combined with anything. If it were made into a compound, it wouldn’t stick around for very long. Radioactive elements with short life spans aren’t good for much because the element doesn’t stay radioactive for the length of time that it would need to be useful.

    5. Page 3 Uranium, an element that is also radioactive, stays radioactive for a long time. People use this element to power nuclear engines and other things. But radioactive particles can also cause cancer and other health problems. Atoms Atoms are tiny, they are smaller than you have ever imagined. 1,000 atoms can fit on the head of a pin! These tiny pieces of matter make up everything in the universe, even you and me! Atoms look like the picture on the right. Nobelium has 102 protons and 157 neutrons in it’s nucleus. It has another 102 electrons spinning around that nucleus.

    6. Page 4 Nobelium Information The symbol For Nobelium is (No) and the atomic number is 102. This symbol and number are used for easy referencing to the element on the Periodic Table of Elements. Nobelium is made by shooting a Calcium nucleus at a Cerium Atom. At room temperature, this element looks shiny, metallic and is a solid form of matter. Nobelium’s atom looks like the Diagram on the right. Nobelium’s atom has 102 electrons spinning around it’s nucleus. There are: First Energy Level: 2 Second Energy Level: 8 Third Energy Level: 18 Fourth Energy Level: 32 Fifth Energy Level: 32 Sixth Energy Level: 8 Seventh Energy Level: 2

Energy-The capacity to do work Trans-Uranium-An element that has an atom with a heavier atomic mass than Uranium. Atom-The smallest unit of matter. Element-A single pure substance.
