The Land • Five parts • Piney Woods- Four national forests • Gulf Coastal Plain- Many Bays and bayous where various rivers empty into Gulf of Mexico • South Texas Plain- Dry land with thorny bush • Post Oak Belt- Rolling hills and prairie • Blackland Prairie- rich, dark soil • Largest region in Texas • Thirdof the state • Extends to the east to Atlantic Ocean

  3. Industry • Natural: Oil, gas, lignite, limestone, gravel, and lumber • Crops: cotton, corn, sorghum, grains • Large cattle ranch- King Ranch and fishing is important to this region • Area helps Texas be in the top five states for fresh vegetables • Also know for its orchards of citrus fruits

Major Cities • Houston- • Started as aport city • Now it’s a major center for trade with foreign countries • Home to: NASA, Texas Medical Center, artists • San Antonio- • Known for it’s cultures • Home to: Riverwalkand Alamo • Dallas- • Started as a trading post or small frontier store • Now it’s a leading business center

  5. Major Cities Cont. • Austin • Started as our state capital • Now it remains our capital • Home to several universities • Other cities include: • Longview • Galveston • Brownsville • Laredo • Bryan/College Station • Waco

  6. Landmarks • Padre Islands • Barrier island • Longest sand beach in the US • The beaches are set aside to be preserved • It’s called Padre Island National Seashore
