Aims and Purposes, Principles • To accelerate economic growth • To promote regional peace and stability • To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance • The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion or coercion • Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty and equality • Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another • Settlement of differences and disputes by peaceful manner • Renunciation of the threat or use of force • Effective cooperation among themselves THE ASEAN WAY

Treaties • The Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) • Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) • Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban (CNTB) • Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Use of Chemical Weapons • Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) • UN Security Council Resolution 1540

UN Security Council Resolution 1540 UNSCR 1540 helps to prevent terrorists and criminal organizations from obtaining the world’s most dangerous weapons • prohibit support to non-state actors seeking WMD and their means of delivery • adopt and enforce effective laws prohibiting activities involving the proliferation of WMD and their means of delivery to non-state actors • have and enforce effective measures to reduce the vulnerability of many legitimate activities to misuse in ways that would foster the proliferation of WMD and their means of delivery to non-state actors
